Will my doctor give me a glucose meeter or do I have to buy one? If I have to buy one, where is the cheapest place to buy a good one, and what brand? And test strips and lancets? Which tests hurt the least and how small of a needle can you use and still get a large enough blood sample? Just trying to put the pieces together

Those health fairs are always SO early for a night owl like me, but I will keep my eyes open. GREAT idea. S2

Your doctor may give you a free meter, but often it's a meter from the largest companies which charge a fortune for the strips. Check places online such as http://www.westerndiabetic.com . Usually you can get a free meter if you buy discounted strips. Good luck!

Most meters that are purchased have some kind of coupon or rebate and the meter ends up being basically free. So find one that you can afford to keep supplied, as the test strips are what cost the money.
My lancets are 30's and they don't hurt. If you prick the sides of your fingers it hurts less as well and you can get all kinds. Again, look at your lancing device that will come with your meter. Most are pretty much the same, but some of them have special lancets and, again, you want something that you can easily find your supplies for.
If you go to the "Product Reviews" on the site and look up meters, you will find a lot of reviews on all kinds of meters.

And, under care services on the left links there is one for diabetic supplies…I saw strips on the cheap here, but not for my meter. The "soft click" is a nice pen that doesn't hurt much, and Gabby is right, if you stick the side of the finger, it hurts less!!!! Don't forget to change fingers too. S2

If you have medicare due to disability part B will pay for all your supplies but you can still get the meter free, as others have said here.

I have used many different meters and bayer contour is my favorite.

The lancets are small and do not hurt that much.

I am always checking the Sunday ads in CVS and Walgreen's. Think one of them had a meter with a rebate for the full price, one of the Accu-Chek ones. I like my Accu-Chek Compact plus, as I do not need to "calibrate the strips to the meter like the One Touch Ultra I have. All were free from the manufacturers. Roche labs is the manufacturer for the Accu-Chek, has 24 hr customer service, and will send me strips, lancets, and diaries. Give them a call and see if they can help…800-858-8072. Good Luck! S2

You also might want to look into going to a diabetics class. You can either find one through your doctor or the local hospital. Great thing is they are free. There you will learn the basics and most will give out free meters. However the testing strips are the most expensive part of the meter. Wal Mart has a brand, Reli On, the price isn't that bad and the strips are reasonable.

The ReliOn from Wal Mart has gotten muck better and uses a small amount of blood for testing like the brand names. What is different is the price of strips. Their strips are at half the price as the others. Something to think about if you do not have prescriptions on your health care insurance or higher co pays.
