The hardest experience I’ve ever had!

I’ve been diagnosed as type 2 diabetic at age 28 as of December 2017. This by far has been the hardest thing I’ve ever experienced and I’m not exactly sure as to how I should cope with this…and to add insult to injury I currently have no insurance. How do you get into the “groove” of this lifestyle? My levels are constantly high, what are your tips on lowering your levels. ALSO…how do you guys use your insulin. This is all so new to me and I’m still feeling like this all happened yesterday. I can’t seem to gain weight. I’m always stressed and worried. Feels like I’m caught in a blur.

Learn as much as you can about diabetes and what you can do to better manage it. Welcome to this site. Many here have developed very successful coping mechanisms. A book that was pivotal in my control was Dr Richard Bernstein's "Diabetes Solution". It opened my eyes to the role played by carbohydrates in our diet in causing higher than normal blood glucose (BG) levels. I've lived with my Type 1 diabetes now for 42 years, having been diagnosed at age 27. Whether Type 2 or Type 1 (or Type 1.5 or Gestational diabetes), making lifestyle changes concerning diet, weight and activity level will help better manage your BG's. If I were to counsel one thing, it would be for you to become CARBOHYDRATE-AWARE. Read all of the food labels to determine carb content and serving size. For foods without labels, get yourself a book or app with that info ("Calorie King" is a good one). Figure out how many carbohydrate grams you are currently eating per day and, if your BG's are too high, cut back on your daily carb allowance. There is no "one right amount" of carbs that works for everyone. It depends upon gender, body type, age and activity level. For me, cutting back on my carbs yielded much better control. My last A1c was 6.0. Does your doctor have you on insulin? Any other meds for diabetes? (When I was first dx'd in 1976, I had dropped 10 lbs in 2 weeks, from 117 lbs to 107, was constantly thirsty and had to urinate nearly every 10 minutes. After taking an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test I was immediately started on insulin. Many adult-onset Type 1's are frequently misdiagnosed as Type 2's. There are blood tests that can definitively determine whether you are Type 1 or Type 2. Have you consulted with an endocrinologist or are you letting your Primary Care doctor handle this?) As a chronic disease goes, diabetes is one that is very manageable providing we make the right choices. For me, life is good!

I was diagnosed as Type 1 in October '17, so that feeling is pretty fresh for me, too. I sat on the couch and cried, not because I felt bad, but because I don't want to do this. I don't want to watch every thing that goes in my mouth, and I don't want to take injections, but it is what it is, and almost a year in, I'm honestly in a pretty good place with it now.

I don't know if it's an option for you as type 2, but if you can get a cgm, it has made a world of difference to me. I check my blood sugar, no finger pricks, 30-40 times a day, and I have a very good idea of what different foods do to me, how quickly my insulin shot reacts, etc. I was diagnosed with an A1C of 11.2, and last week it was 6.9. I take my long acting in two doses, because the one dose was wearing off before 24 hours. I don't take any more, just separate it into two doses. Then my short acting I take on a sliding scale - 1 unit per 10 grams of carbs, and then add or subtract a little based on my reading. I add a unit for every 30 points above 100, or subtract a unit if I am at 70 or below. I lost 35 pounds before I was diagnosed Type 1, because originally I was diagnosed Type 2 and I was starving trying to keep the numbers down. I gained back 20 very quickly after taking insulin, but I have since lost that, and I am losing about 3 lbs a month now. Do you need to gain weight?
