Can a diabetic person donate blood? Is it safe?

You can donate blood and platelets. They will check your iron levels and sometimes because we try to eat less red meats, that can be difficult to obtain a level that is acceptable. But my mom donates about every 3 months, she's a member of the 10 gallon club.

The other thing you have to be careful of is that is will change your A1C levels at your lab visits. So you may have a lower A1c if you donate on a regular basis and you need to let your doctor know that you donate.

As long as you have your diabetes in control (diet & exercise, drugs or insulin are fine), you haven't used bovine insulin and you qualify for all the non-diabetes related criteria there is no problem.
