I have my very first colonoscopy next Monday morning (I am 64 yo). I can't believe the amount of prep I have to do, but the doctor stressed that I follow this to the letter, since it's my first one. Also, because my mother died of colon cancer and the possibility that I might have some polyps to be removed.

I start Saturday morning, drinking 10 oz of magnesium citrate. Then only liquids like water, ginger ale, clear chicken or beef broth or clear jello (who makes clear jello???). Nurse said no coffee because it's not clear.

The next day, I'm supposed to mix something called Nulytely with some lemon flavored packet and mix with a gallon of water. They said it's easier to take if it's refrigerated (is it???). I have to drink it over the course of the day. Only CLEAR liquids — like really clear broth, nothing creamy, just water, etc. (Does anyone here use chicken boullion cubes and strain it?)

The next morning I have to have 2 Fleet enemas 30 min. apart (before I leave to catch the bus at 7AM). My nurse said to be fasting and when I mentioned my concern about "leakage" she said not to worry because there won't be anything by that time. Ok, it's me — not her — should I be concerned? Geez She said I can take my meds, tho, except for Monday.

I'm not concerned about the procedure itself — just the prep and getting up in time to do all the stuff I need to do before the procedure. A friend is picking me up afterwards. Is there a clear Gatorade or some "clear" jello with flavor? I don't have much time to stock up on what I need. Any advice would be appreciated. (Also, I think my doctor said black coffee would be okay on Saturday and Sunday and the nurse wasn't sure. What did ya'll do?) Thanks!!

I've never had a colonoscopy and I have been avoiding my first one for several years. Now, I don't want to do it at all after reading what you have to do. Ugh!

Yeah, clear just means it's free from solids and you can see through it. So any kind of broth, tea, even jello is clear, but they also advised me to avoid any foods with red, blue or dark dyes in them. So I think you are stuck with lemon jello. Mine was just a 24 hour prep, so I didn't have to do anything special, but keep it clear. It's not hard for just one day.

I drank an oral liquid and it was warm, a lot less than it used to be. It does clear you out, that is for sure. It is kind of torture for a few hours the day before, but by the time you go in, you are out of pretty much anything. At least I was. I had a friend take me and also take me home. I dreaded it, but it was not really all that bad. In fact, for fun, I pasted two smilie faces on my butt. One on each side....LOL.

Thanks! I asked my nurse about yellow jello and she said only clear jello — and my preparation starts 2 days before the procedure!! She's my Nurse Ratched! I will get the yellow jello today, then. Boullion sort of settles at the bottom of my cup, but I think as long as I don't drink the dregs I should be okay. Two days seems a little extreme but that's what they instructed me to do. By the way, I LOVE your smilie face surprise!!!

My sister has had two of them and she said you can only have clear liquids and no coffee. You have to follow the instructions. I do know that when I went with her a man could not get his done because not only did he drink two cups of coffee he also drank something red and they would not touch him.

They give you those instructions for a reason and you are suppose to follow them. You can eat clear broth and drink a clear. When my sister woke up they gave her soda and graham crackers.

I had a stress test and could not have coffee the day of the test. They took my blood sugar before the test and it was okay. After the test I was low so they gave me graham crackers and small can or real soda. then tested me again and i was allowed to go home. I took the soda and gave it to my sister. Had I not followed the instructions and drank anything with caffeine in it they would not have done the test. I had to have my heart rate go up with medication, I could not do it because of my heart problem.

Thanks for the info, Joyce. My instructions from the doctor and nurse were conflicted. But the doctor did stress they wouldn't do the procedure in certain circumstances. Don't want to get turned away after all that preparation like the man you mentioned. Three days without coffee can be a real drag, but guess I'll live :-)

I'm not sure about the black coffee. I did use chicken bouillon granules. It mixed up clear without any need to strain. The lovely potion is best as cold and you can stand.

I keep a bottle of sugar sweetened ginger ale for lows and one of diet for otherwise. 7UP and Sprite are ok but I don't care for them.

Test, Test, Test and it will soon be all over.

I'd better stay away from the coffee, then. I will use a lot of the chicken boullion (will look for the granules). Maybe get some Diet Sprite to have with the ginger ale. Thanks!

Once you've done the prep, the hard part is over. I just had my second and I got to have the delightful (NOT) Golytely. Whoever named it was sick in the head. Even with flavoring, it is just plain nasty. I had to drink a half gallon the night before and the other half gallon the morning of and the nurse was right. There won't be anything left. I was instructed not to have anything with red or purple dye. Because you have to drink it so quickly, after I took my gulp I washed it down with gingerale. Real gingerale with sugar. Be sure to test a lot so you don't go low. Something like white cranberry juice would be good to have on hand. Really, while you're drinking that nastiness, you won't want to much else. You have to drink it so fast that it makes you feel bloated. Good luck.
My Dr found 1 polyp and he said it was inflammatory. I don't have to do it again for 10 yrs. Yay! The endoscopy in 3. Had them both together. that's when they said I have gastritis.
