This time of year brings with it some challenges for many of us. But at the same time, it brings some wonderful blessings and bright spots in our day to day routine.

What inspired me was the other day when I was picking up some last minute items at the grocery store and I was at a clogged point in the aisle. I always try to smile, specially when making eye contact with people and this time was no different. So as I stood there smiling, a lady stopped and commented on my smile and encouraged me to never stop sharing it. I made her day, she made mine and it was such a tiny moment, but made a huge impact.

What are some of yours during the holidays? What makes you smile, gives you peace, lightens your heart and makes you grateful?

Hey Gabby, that's a great story. I also try to take a moment and smile when I have the opportunity. I have made it my intention to make eye contact, smile, and say thank you to check out clerks at the grocery store or any other store I go into. Just taking that moment to acknowledge someone else's humanity has been rewarding. Of course, I don't always get a response, and clerks in NYC often don't say thank you. But when I do make a connection, and they smile back, I feel a rush of feel good energy that can keep me feeling upbeat the rest of the day. I think this is especially important when, with the day to day stress of the holidays, we can forget that the holidays are all about kindness and gratitude.

I play cards with a group every Wednesday evening. Maggie, the doyenne of our group ( and a fierce competitor), is 93 years old. Last Wednesday, I wore an ivory-colored cable knit cardigan I had made for myself from Italian merino wool some years back. It's now a bit large on me but it's classic and warm. Maggie complimented me on it and asked to try it on. It fit her like a glove and I offered it to her; she'll get much more use out of it than I will. I'm very thankful for her friendship…even though she often wins my quarters from me!

That's so true, Gabby! I can remember a time a few years ago when a simple kindness — like a seat on the train, a smile when I was feeling beaten down, a sweet card in the mail — just pulled me out of the dumps. I'm sure the people who offered their encouragement didn't see it as a big thing. But to someone who is beginning to lose hope, it is simply everything!! Keep doing what you're doing, woman!
