I was diagnosed with diabetes in November 2016 but misdiagnosed as type 1. I was immediately put on insulin and the weight that I lost returned gradually. I was on insulin for 8 months and was sick most of the time because I was not getting the correct medication. It is only after seeking a second opinion that I started to improve as I was put on glucophage and diaglucide. I've been on the oral medication for 4 months and on insulin for 8 months. I started losing weight (like 5 kgs) in the last two months. Could this be as a result of the oral medication? I think that it is as my mother is type 2 and she has been on the same medication for 2 years. She lost a lot of weight and has not gained any weight ever since.

Ask yourself these questions about any diet plan you're considering:

Does it include various foods from the major food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, low-fat dairy products, lean protein sources and nuts?
Does it include foods you like and that you would enjoy eating for a lifetime — not just for several weeks or months?
Can you easily find these foods in your local grocery store?
Will you be able to eat your favorite foods or, better yet, all foods (even if some are in small quantities)?
Does it fit your lifestyle and budget?
Does it include proper amounts of nutrients and calories to help you lose weight safely and effectively?
Is regular physical activity part of the plan?
If the answer to any of these questions is no, keep looking. There are better diet plans out there for you.

Eat a high-protein breakfast. …
Avoid sugary drinks and fruit juice. …
Drink water a half hour before meals. …
Choose weight loss-friendly foods (see list). …
Eat soluble fiber. …
Drink coffee or tea. …
Eat mostly whole, unprocessed foods. …
Eat your food slowly.

I was on insulin when first dxd. It isn't just for T1s. I managed to maintain without weight gain for just over a year, until a course of steroids caused rapid weight gain. Nothing I have done, with or without insulin has enabled me to lose weight. I use Bydureon now, a once a week injectable. It is also used to generate some weight loss, but not for me. It is an excellent diabetes drug though, IMO.

Insulin by nature of what it is, moves glucose into our cells. If we do not burn that off, it's converted into fat. That is the function of insulin, so in all honesty, it was just doing it's job.

Being on insulin doesn't mean you must gain weight, but it's a common side effect of it's use. If your numbers are in a good range and you are feeling good and your doctor is happy with the results from the oral meds, then go for it. The ultimate goal is healthy range glucose levels. Which ever treatment helps you achieve that is the one I would stick with.
