I agree with Gabby about Memorial day. It is a day to remember those who laid their lives down in the defense of our liberties. It's original name was Decoration Day when the graves of Civil War dead were cleaned up and adorned with flowers.

The day in honor of all veterans is Veterans' Day which was originally Armistice Day celebrating the end of the ironically named War to end all Wars (WWI) on November 11 at 11AM.

That said I especially remember the veterans of my family on both days. We are fortunate that none died from their injuries but they all suffered from mental, emotional and physical problems for the rest of their lives. 2 of my sons are living, thanks be to God. One like his great grandpa is living with pain from injuries received while serving the rest of us. The other has a bum knee that may be self-inflicted. I have 2 brothers-in-law who served in Vietnam. One infantry the other logistics. The ground pounder has gotten away (RIP) from an extremely virulent lung cancer that metastasized quickly to his brain. He went from clear lungs to death in 6 weeks. I suspect Agent Orange.

It's hard to be happy on this day. I couldn't write about it on Monday as it was too raw. My own Dad was a gentle, loving and generous man who would have bouts of rage his whole life after coming back from Europe in 1946. He is at peace now.

Today is the time to remember our fallen, those who have given their lives and altered the lives of their families to allow us to share in our freedoms. They are remembered and honored.
