Atorvastatin Side Effects With Type 2 Diabetes

I haven't had a lipid panel an 4 or 5 years. My former doctor prescribed something for cholesterol but it made me feel fatigued and bloated. Since my cholesteral was only 4 or 5 points of normal, I stopped taking it.

A couple of months or so ago, I began intermittent fasting because the levemir my doctor prescribed for type 2 diabetes caused voracious hunger, lethargy and weight gain. I have been taking metformin for years w/no problems and still no problems with that one. I lost about 10 lbs. over a couple of months and my energy level and mood soared. I began lots of walking, then joined a health club where I do swim aerobics, pool stretches, treadmill and lift weights (starting out slow but already see a difference in my legs).

Since I started 10mg atorvastatin 1 x day 3 days ago, I've regained 5 lbs. My eyes, face, chin and upper arms feel puffy, vision blurry, feel fatigued, have leg pain and foot/shin cramps. These seem to be common side-effects of this med.

Since my cholesterol/HDL ratio is 4.8 (which puts me at moderate risk) and my cholesterol is only 207, HDL 43 and LDL 134, triglycerides 149, I have decided to stop taking the medication, no matter what my doctor says. I have also read that it can raise fasting BG levels.

I just need diet advice from those who do intermittent fasting and changed their diet. The only changes to my diet while intermittent fasting was to drink whole organic milk (which I never drank before), eat more cottage cheese, eat bacon and eggs or bacon sandwiches about once every day or two, use ground beef instead of turkey in dishes and sometimes add bacon grease for flavoring while cooking. I'm wondering if I should cut out the milk, stop eating red meat (eat ground turkey instead), stop eating bacon, and just stick to fats like coconut oil, butter, olive oil, nuts and avocados with cottage cheese. I know I need to eat less, but I'm not eating more since on the atorvastatin but I've gained 5 lbs. and don't have the energy for strenuous workouts anymore and I'm nervous. Any suggestions (especially for cookbooks) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

sounds to me like you are on the right path.
weight loss, a low carb way of eating, exercise, and fasting 16-24 hours every day helped take my lipid profile from "dangerous" to "ideal".
the number I'm most concern about is the triglyceride to HDL ratio as it is an indicator of LDL particle size. the ideal ratio is under 2 and over 4 is considered too high. yours is 3.5 (149/43) … were I you, I'd be focused on ways to increase your HDL (https://authoritynutrition.com/9-ways-to-rais...) and decrease triglycerides (https://authoritynutrition.com/13-ways-to-low...)

Thanks for the links, Steve, and for the straight talk. I looked at them and plan to study them further. In the past I supplemented my diet with fish oil and steered clear of bacon, sausage and processed meats. I never eat fish, but plan to step that up, after reading the articles. If I could learn to love sardines or herring, I think it would satisfy my "snack attacks" and salt cravings. Also, plan to cut back on the butter and use more olive oil, as I did in the past. All I can say is when I stopped taking HCTZ, I gained half of my 15 lb weight loss back. I'm taking another diuretic now and and while it's working ok, and much of the fluid is out of my legs, most of the weight hung on. Part of why I'm now taking prozac again. At least I'm not beating myself up over it now. I take 20 mg Simvastatin and my cholesterol has been great for 2 1/2 yrs. I continue to take it for other reasons but I don't think it's needed anymore for my cholesterol. Isn't it great to have an excuse to eat bacon? I don't eat a lot of red meat these days, but it's not completely out of my diet. Pork and chicken are my favorites anyway. Sorry, I know I'm not much help on the questions you asked. It's nice to know I'm not the only one out there fighting the weight loss battle. The prozac and maybe the extra dose of levothyroxin are helping my energy levels. I was really not wanting to go to the gym, but now I'm ok with it again. I know Dennis and Steve will probably have some input for you. Take care.

Thanks ~~ Well, bacon and whole milk were recent additions to my diet, after watching Butter Bob videos. Sometimes I wonder if the high cholesterol was due to the fasting — but that doesn't make sense now since your body won't burn the old fat if you keep feeding it new fat. My guess is that adding bacon is better once you are in "maintain" mode. Also, I was drinking 3 large glasses of milk/day in addition to cheese and cottage cheese and greens (and taking a new calcium supplement w/D3 and K). I think I was getting more than enough calcium, so can eliminate the milk.

I didn't take my statin last night and feel less puffy already and a little more energetic. I love chicken and pork chops, too. Fasting (average 16 hr/day and 24 hours approx 1 x wk and about 20 hr 1 x wk) has done the most to increase my energy levels. I want to go all the time now, but I still want to lose weight because of the stress it puts on my body — no amount of exercise can counteract that.

Good luck to you. It is so frustrating, I know, when fluid retention makes the scales jump, no matter what you do.

When I was losing weight my cholesterol was very high. Once I lost all the weight I needed to lose my cholesterol numbers came way down. I am convinced that during times of weight loss our cholesterol goes up as our body burns that fat it has been storing.

Thanks for your input! I read something yesterday that agrees with you. And I know that — other than taking the calcium supplement w/D3 & K — fasting might have loosed fat stores which were circulating in my bloodstream? Glad to know that your numbers came way down after you lost the weight. That is why I am trying so hard to lose weight. I recently added weight training and can feel a slight difference, so am trying to hang in there until the weight loss really starts. Luckily, I haven't gained weight from weightlifting!

Gotta watch supplementing the 'fat soluble' vitamins, A,D,E,K. K in particular can cause clotting problems if it gets too high, so ask your doc how best to monitor that…a friend had a leg clot that nearly killed her, cause was said to be the extra K she was taking on top of a higher-K diet.

Excesses of these can also lead to issues as weight is lost and the stored vitamins are released, so another thing to bear in mind. :)

Thanks! As a matter of fact, I just read something this morning about fat-soluble vitamins and have decided to lower my calcium supplement w/K and D3. Also, decided against the fish oil and eat sardines w/cheddar cheese instead. I had no idea about the clotting and very much appreciate your mentioning that — good luck with your fasting! After reading your and Steve's posts, I am planning a smaller "window" of meals every day and cutting back my calories. Did it yesterday (5 hour window with salad and pork chop at 4pm) and my BG was down about 40 points this morning from my average!!

I ate bacon , sausage, eggs whole milk and real butter on my way while fasting 2 times a week for 24 hrs each time. My cholesterol numbers came down after a brief rise, it seems that the body fat we burn releases more cholesterol into the bloodstream only temporarily before it exits the body after being filtered thru the kidneys and liver into waste. It seems that the grain carb and artificial oil fats stored by our body has that bad cholesterol locked up in the body fat. By burning that body fat it is temporarily released again before leaving, then cholesterol balances out into normal once again. I had extremely high cholesterol for years even while taking medications to lower it. But the fasting and LCHF diet did more than the drugs were doing.
