I have had Type II diabetes for about 10 years and I KNOW that it has been due to my being about 80 pounds overweight. I talked to my doctor about having Lap-Band surgery and he was thrilled at the prospect of me having it, so I screened and got a wonderful Lap-Band surgical doctor and have lost 55 pounds so far. My regular doctor can't believe how much of a difference it has made for not only my diabetes, but my high bloodpressure as well. He told me that there is a big chance that I will soon be able to go off both meds. I have about 35 more pounds to go to reach my goal weight. Anyone considering this surgery should not be afraid to contact a Lap-band surgical doctor. It could be a life safer.

My wife had the gastric surgery (note: she was not and is not diabetic) and has lost 135 pounds since the "journey" … there is much debate on the discussion/support groups on whether weight loss surgery "cures" diabetes because for some members they are not having diabetic issues while others continue to. Weight loss surgery (success/failure/pros/cons) is completely an individual choice to make with individual results achieved. Get all of the facts before considering such a procedure because what works for one person may not work for another. I am sooo happy to hear of your experiences with the surgery and those excellent results will affect your mind, body and soul. Please stay on course. There are many gastric/lapband patience that unfortunately gain back all their weight and more. Keep us posted on your progress.

Okay…my most recent update… I have lost 90 pounds and maintain pretty much the same weight now…145 lbs which gives me a BMI of 27…which means I am no longer considered medically obese (30 is considered obese…40 and over is considered morbidly obese). Anyway, the most important thing of all is that my reason for having the lap-band has come to fruition…I am NOT A DIABETIC ANYMORE and off all my diabetic meds. I am maintaining an A1C of 5.5…PERFECT! I am not saying this to brag…I am just giving you information that you can use to consider alternatives to controlling your diabetes. Lap-Band surgery is NOT for everyone. The doctors know best!

I have honestly and truly considered the lap band. My only problem is I would like to have at least two more children… is the lap band safe to use while being a diabetic…and is it safe to use while being pregnant and a diabetic?

I know those may be odd questions.. but I am seriously considering getting it done..I would just like more insight if that makes sense?

Well, I think you should really be talking to your doctor about both things. Sorry I can't help you on that.

Actually, I did speak to my doctor yesterday, not only did I speak to her, but I got a referral to a lap band surgeon! In fact, I have my lap band seminar on the 15th =)

congratulations on reaching your goal. I am seriously considering lap band surgery. Right now I need to lose over 100 pounds to be where the charts say I should weigh but would be happy just to lose 100 pounds.

How overweight does someone need to be in order to have the lap band surgery? I am seriously considering it. The cost concerns me because my insurance does not cover it.

I am getting ready to go to my first class on this :) I am so excited. I have to jump through a lot of hoops for my insurance to cover it but I am most definitely willing to jump lol

congratulations on your weight loss.

How exciting that you are having the surgery. Please keep me posted on your progress. You will NOT be sorry you had it done. Hugs…

I don't know how overweight one must be to be eligible (per the surgeon) to have LB surgery. I know my BMI was 40 which is considered to be obese (I weighed 235 lbs prior to the surgery). My BMI is now 32 which means I am no longer considered obese but it's suppose to be around 28 I think. I weigh 170 pounds right now and plan to lose 20 more at which time I hope to go off my metformin and my high blood pressure meds. Can't wait (or should I say…can't weight…lol)! BTW…I had to pay for it myself, but it was the best $$ I have ever spent.

I am in the midst of getting the lap band done i will be taking my third class in October and am getting more and more eager to have this done . I have been over weight all my life and finally made up my mind. Plus i need to loose weight to get on a kidney transplant list so that is the most important reason why i am going through it.. .. Great job and keep up the great work…

Me2 2009-09-20 19:15:53 -0500 Report

I am so proud of you for having it done. I pray that when you get down to a safe weight, that you find a donor for that kidney. Good luck on your LB venture…I know you can do it. Please keep me updated on your progress. Hugs…

Lap band surgery is something my doctor has been pushing me about for about 6 months would really like to discuss this more with people who have had it.

That is awesome news on your weight loss. I have thought about Lap Band surgery but my insurance does not cover it. Did you have many side effects after the surgery?

Me2 2009-09-14 10:54:45 -0500 Report

My insurance did not pay for it either, so I bit the bullet and luckily had the $$ to pay for it myself. Not cheap, but worth every penny. I have now lost a bit over 60 pounds and feeling wonderful. Of course my goal thru all of this is to be able to go off my meds…I think it's going to happen soon. Whoooohoooo! All I can tell you is that if you have the $$ get it done.
