I have a question, I have been tested in the past due to the increased risk in my family for Type 2… I recently underwent surgery however the day before surgery my fasting blood sugar was 177. The doc did not tell me it was hig but, signed off on it anyway and still performed the surgery. Any comments?

I was also in the hospital recently for treatment of pain for RSD in both feet and was told I was pre-diabetic. It really scared me. My fasting number is 168. I have to go to my doctor because he wants me to meter and take medication. I understand your confusion and your fear. I am TERRIFIED of needles and hope through diet and exercise to nip this in the bud, if possible. I have stopped eating sugar and modified my diet with the literature I was given in the hospital. I hope everything goes well for you. I was hoping this site would help answer a lot of my questions. It is nice to know there are others available to discuss diabetes with.

Type 2 diabetes runs in family and I guess I just thought I would never get it. Sigh. Well I was diagnosed last summer. As soon as I was diagnosed I called both of my sisters and told them. They are both following a diabetic diet even though neither one is. We all just figured it is better for them to play it safe at this time. I would hate to see either of them get it also. So far they are both doing great. They check their sugars monthly and get tested once a year with their doctor.

Pepina: What was your final diagnosis? Are you a full blown diabetic or considered pre? I am certainly no expert but it sounds like full blown diabetes? Were you given any meds?

Don't worry, if you are diagnosed with diabetes it is not the end of the world. But it will feel like it is. We are here to help you get through this. Most of us have been where you are and have made it through to the other side.

My sugars have been all over the place the past few days… Fasting is anywhere from 168-192. And 2 hours after I eat they are way higher from 221-287. I'm wondering if my body is not able to break down the sugar and if I'm producing too much insulin… I go to the doc again tomorrow for the results of the blood work she did on Friday, we'll see.

Those are high enough numbers, you'll have more info after you see your doc. Its all about the carbs, its not that you can't have sugar as much as if that is really what you want to waste your carb count on.

bread converts 100% to glucose and will raise your bgl faster.

Drink 8 glasses of water a day. Get a Britta Pitcher and leave your water at room temp. Try it with lemon/lime slices. try no caffeine. no bleached white sugar or bleached white flour. Fruit is the best source of water.

Thanks…I know but, I can't eat sugar if I'm diabetic right? Ok let me just tell you how much I LUV Ice Cream, and Chocolate and so many other things… I will take care of myself though. I've seen what happens when prople do NOT take care of themselvs when they are diabetic! IT's going to be very TOUGH… I hope I have the will power you all seem to have :D

Ok, as if that wans't enough I just found out that I had Keytones in my urin and my Liver enzynes were also high… Which is a result of the sugar is not being broken down in my body!! I went to the Doctor today and they did another fasting test, and a test that will average my sugars from the past few months. However all signs are pointing to me being Diabetic…

They did an A1c, it's not an average of your sugars over the past few months but is sometimes described as such.

The ketones and liver enzymes part is interesting. However, if you eat a low carb diet then ketones in the urine means that you are doing it right!

Everyone is right, more testing is in order. But also realize that the body can do strange things when it is under stress or fighting an infection. So right before any surgery, I would expect most people's blood sugars will be higher than normal.

However, 177 is quite high for a fasting number. More testing is certainly the right course to pursue.

Thank you all for the comments… I'm seeing my doctor today. Like I said due to the family history, I've been testing myself off and on for about a year now. I was just suprised that the result was that high and not 1 but 2 doctors signed off on the blood work and didn't tell me. Instead they chose to rush me off to the OR to redo the original surgery… It was a VERY stressfull day to say the least!!

That's well above the criteria for diagnosing diabetes. You need a second fasting test and an glucose tolerance test.

Yeah, definately get seen…get a glucose tolerance test. You have already been testing your sugars? So that's a plus that you are heads up on some of the things you should know, be aware of…history cuz of family. But let us know how it turns out. Good luck!! Hugs! Sheila

You need to be tested the sooner you know
and take care of it the less damage you will do to your self.
this is a big deal you are the only you you have
best of luck

Yes, get a glucose tolerance test for sure. I was just diagnosed with prediabetes too. I need to learn so much. My dad had Type 1 diabetes… good luck and keep us up to date.
