Carbonated drinks does it to me. I've cut them out and keep trying to drink more water every day. You feel better without them!

Well, since the drinks are really not my problem, I guess it's certain foods that's causing the swelling.Have you heard of using the cherry extract for swelling?

Judimar 2009-08-13 22:17:41 -0500 Report

Hi Ms. Carolyn,

It could be the metaformin causing you gas. I know if I am not eating enough fiber in my meals when I take my metaformin and byetta it can cause me to have a lot of extra gas.

I haven't heard of the cherry extract. Have you used it?

Ms.Carolyn 2009-08-13 22:26:33 -0500 Report

It's not gas,it's just a swelling like now where you're looking like you're ready to deliver.I have diarhea all the time with the metformin. No, I haven't tried the cherry extract , but I ask the question on this site somewhere and that's the answer I got.So I was wondering if anyone had tried it.

Yes diarherra is a side effect. The bloating could be gas. Sometimes I have that. Gas can cause the belly to bloat and distend. You should perhaps talk to your doctor if this keeps happening.

I also have the swelling it makes me look like 8 months pregnant which I just found out about a week ago I can not get pregnant at all which I am a little upset over it but I have four boys and that is enough for me. My dr took me off of the MET thank god but she has not put me on anything else at this very moment so I am trying my best to keep BS level which is not working I see her next week and at that time I am going to find out what the treatment plan is for diabetes.

I thought it was just me…I swear I have *dickydo* (where if I was a boy my stomach would stick out more than my dicky do) havent seen my toes over my bloated stomach in a long time
I have been off Metformin for months, they only thing I drink is Crystal Light and water,I dont add salt to anything, but it seems something I eat everyday gives me gas in a BAD way. If there is a magic answer to the bloat, clue me in, I swear the first time someone asks me when I am due, I am just going to fall on the floor and cry

Good news is we're not alone apparently. Bad news is, I haven't found an answer. Some days are better than others. Even though I've cut back on soda (even diet seemed to be a problem) and salt, I still feel & look like I've swallowed a extra large basketball! Extra liquids, being off Metaformin haven't helped. Hope someone finds answer soon…I don't need more reasons to hate myself or my diseases.

My mom has the swelling in the stomach and for quite a few years now. I just recently developed this symptom. We are both diabetic she never took metformin. I have taken metformin for a number of years with no side effects. I do not believe that is the problem. (many have suffered the diarrhea until used to it) The bloating is not like gas, it is really hard that seems to attack one area and get really hard and feel like a muscle spasm. My mom drinks cherry extract and blueberry juice to relieve her gout. Also eating cherries is just as good. I am not sure the effects on the stomach this has. I read about this conditions and if you have blood sugar spikes a Rx named reglan may help, this does have alot of side effects to read about. This condition i also believe has something to due with effects from diabetic neuropathy. Anyone else have something to share or similar symptoms?

Do you take metformin?

Ms.Carolyn 2009-08-13 22:11:47 -0500 Report

Yes, I take metformin and januvia and I just don't know.

kdroberts 2009-08-14 07:09:27 -0500 Report

If you aren't already then take it during a meal. The swelling/bloating issue is a reasonably common one with metformin and taking it during a meal helps. Also, if you are taking the regular version the extended release does help a lot as well.

Yeah, I have this problem myself…I take a diuretic myself…Lasix in the am to help me get the fluid out rather than swell and be so uncomfie. But if you are eating too my salt or drinking too much soda it can cause this problem too. Good luck! Sheila

Thanks for listening, but I don't sprinkle extra salt on my food any more, and I'm not a big soda drinker.

Are you retaining salt,or drinking to much diet soda or products

Ms.Carolyn 2009-08-13 22:07:48 -0500 Report

I'm not retaining salt, I don't guess and I don't drink a lot of sodas.

But there are also yeast in certain products as you no, that could cotribute to swelling. Try sitting in a sauna if you can,it rids the body of excess toxins that could be a side effect as bloating.

I am having issues too. I am not having gas issues and do not drink soda. I drink water all day and always have. I also really watch sodium and have since my 30s because of kidney and bladder issues back then. I guess I won't complain about the gas issue…I had more gas BEFORE I went on Metformin than I do know. One issue I do notice is no matter how much I drink water I do not get rid of it for hours and hours. It is hot and humid here so maybe it is being used up. I need to pick up smart water as it seems the friendliest electrolyte replacement for diabetids. I had bought G2 by Gatorade and then realized how much sugar is in this LOW CAL version. Anyone know a good lemonade we can drink or a recipe for some? All of a sudden I want so so bad. I made smoothies and love blueberry and lemon together. Try watermelon with a touch of mint extract too. No extra sugar needed at least for me. The watermelon does it and is refreshing. It is one of my snacks so to speak. Watermelon has lots of water in it too as does celery so I hope to lose the swelling. I have that Donald Duck look I call it. from beneath my breasts it is solid but looks swollen like pregnacy. I had it before meds. Anyone lucky enough to be able to swim, it seems to help me lose water and cut down on the swollen feet and fingers. FYI even broccoli etc are not giving me gas like they did. It goes to show how we all react to meds in different ways PLUS we are on other things too so interactions happen. Good luck to all. Thanks for being here for a newbie

Crystal Light has Lemonade regular or pink which is great too. The stores also have the generic versions which are just as good too, much cheaper. Most people will tell you how good this is, there's NO sugar added to it, but you would not know really. Try it! Good luck! Sheila

DawnFL 2009-09-06 11:56:21 -0500 Report

Thanks about the lemonade. I found Tropicana puts one out in the soda aisle. The diet one has NO aftertaste that I notice and does the trick when I want something else other than water. I love water so it is rare but everyone needs something different. I also like to add it to blueberries and make a smoothie of sorts. The lemonade and berries is healthy and refreshing. Thanks again for telling me about Crystal Light though I am not a big fan of most sugar free drinks due to aftertaste.

i drink ALOT of diet coke i mean 8-10 cans a day sometimes. is that bad? i know it has some sodium.

DawnFL 2009-09-06 11:59:39 -0500 Report

Hon, that is way too much soda period. Don't you feel lousy from it? I am not sure how true it is but some articles claim that artificial sweetners do the same as sugar as far as tricking the body into producing insulin after extended use. I have gone with the stevia products that are coming out now. Sun Crystals are the cheapest that I have found…look for them in the same place as the other artificial sugars and sugar. No aftertaste and natural. It also looks like sugar. I cannot drink soda much because I feel so bloated and lousy from all the gas etc. Good luck, we are all still learning here and I am thankful for the people out here on this site.
