I just did a friend search for others in my state and after going through all 8 pages, I have now invited them all to my friends list. Some of them actually live within an hour from me. Has anyone ever had a "meet & greet" with others from this website ? If so, how did it go ? I am interested in this…for possible social gatherings and wondered if others had thought about it as well.

The Seattle/Puget Sound area is full of active diabetics. April 18th at the Qwest Event Center is the Diabetes Expo, and on May 16 in Redmond is the Tour de Cure. I am enrolled in the Seattle consortium of a nation-wide research study for Type 2 diabetics called Look AHEAD (there are 12 sites across the U.S.) and as we are each supposed to keep the weight off that we lost in the first 6 months of the program, there are many motivating courses to keep us on track. I've lost 40 pounds over the 5 years the program has been running.

Anyone live in the South Sound area?

I have tried to find people from NJ, and so far not too lucky, but yesterday for the first time, someone emailed me that they used to live a few miles away from where I live now. So I sent her an email asking her if she is still in the state. Hope she is, thanks Claudia

I live in San Francisco, California and would love to meet with others who are diabetics also. Anyone out here? I'm also an international caterer and can contribute to a get-together - perhaps pot luck? Perhaps a discussion group?

Hey everyone I decided to go ahead and plan one in Kokomo so check out Diabetes Events and any one in the area that day come on down or over as the case may be. Hope to see alot of us there. I'll have a name tag on so that you can find me.
Thankyou All.

Lets put the States in Order and add our Names under that State so we can see who lives where by going to that State. Then we can set a Day for each month to get together each time near someone else. Say the 2nd Sat. of the Mo. or what ever works for everyone.

I have been looking to start a group in the Kansas City area. Groups for adult type 1's seem to be non-existant in this area. Looking to start a website to help start up the group in this area but need to make sure there is enough of an interest to do so.

So with you bishop but I am WAY out on the east coast in New York state.

Ck with your local ADA. That is how I got started. I pushed and pushed and begged and pleaded. Now there is one once a month. (BUT it is for all, not just T1s which I really want).

tmana 2008-09-09 05:52:00 -0500 Report

Having grown up on Long Island with relatives in Rochester, I'd hardly call Syracuse "the East Coast"… then again, the true "Down Easters" would have something to say about the NYC metro area…

CALpumper 2008-09-10 13:57:28 -0500 Report

Most people I have encountered online live out West so I casually use the term East Coast.

Just easier to write that. Most people think NYC when I mention I am from New York, most forget about the whole upper state. ha ha.

No hard feelings, the East is the East man. ;-)

It is good to see this idea getting some traction. If something gets planned, I hope that you will create an event in the Event section with the hope that others in the area might see it a come along.

Also, I will be presenting in San Francisco around October 22nd/23rd…we could sponsor a Meetup in San Francisco around those days.

I will also presenting in Boston the next week…so we could sponsor a Meetup in Boston around that time as well.

Any takers for a San Francisco or Boston meetup?

Hey Stead,

If I had the funds to travel I would meet up with you in Boston!

Definitely keep us posted on each event and how it went!

Right now we live 8 miles North of Kokomo, Indiana on US 31 It is in the middle of Farm Country. I was born and raised in Tawas,Michigan and that also is in the Country. When my sister-in-law got a divorce she posted it in the News Paper as in the Boonies and out in the Boon Docks. It is a resort town North of Saginaw. We have lived in Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, North Carolina,South Carolina, and Portland, Oregon. Those are the only States I remember living in. I've also been to California the summer I was told I was a Diabetic. Fell asleep in a swiming pool and had to sleep on an air matterss on my stomach for over 3 weeks as I really burned my body something teribble. It was pure murder riding back to Michigan in the backseat of my Uncles car. He laughed all the way home.

Ginetteb 2008-06-25 13:52:00 -0500 Report

Can't blame you there Lanore. New York City is not one of my favorite site in the world. I was born and brought up in Montreal which is a comparable city to New York. I did not like it then and I don't like it now. Montreal is a very nice city and it's very clean as compared to New York, but I never like big cities. I am a nature freak. I love to be in the country, where I can see trees and hear the birds chirp, I love the ocean, I love to hear the surf come in, I love the smell. (I don't like to get into the ocean, too many critters in there) but I sure love to look at it. I also like mountains, the majestic scenery is awsome. I meet my God in nature, that's where I do my best praying. In big cities all you see is concrete, tons of people who don't care about each other, traffic that can damn an angel and it's dirty. Although I was born in a big city, I sure am not a city girl at heart.
Is anybody here living anywhere close to Jacksonville, Florida? Ginette

ncnurse1459 2008-06-25 14:40:07 -0500 Report

Hey Ginette ! I'm not close to Jacksonville, Florida, but am very close to Jacksonville, NC (Camp Lejeune / Marines). We live in the country also…I am DEFINITELY a COUNTRY GIRL ALL THE WAY ! My family lived in Richmond, Va for a short time when I was a child…that was a BIG CITY to us. I visited (actually drove through) Chicago en route to Great Lakes when my youngest daughter was in Navy Boot camp. THAT was definitely ONE BIG CITY ! I haven't had the opprotunity to visit the northeast coast yet, but it's in my future plans…always wanted to be in New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut..during the early fall for the vibrant colors..and maybe some whale watching also ! If you're ever traveling southboud towards Florida (on Interstate 95, look me up…let me know…we live about 45 minutes from one exit off I-95…and we are one hour from the coast…and 6 hours from the NC mountains. At night, my hubby and I love lounging in our hottub on the back deck, watching the stars (sometimes meteors)…so relaxing, sounds of the night, deer, rabbits, squirrels, fox, bobcat, bats…all around us..but nothing to worry about..the country is in my blood…and we live close enough to towns…to go out to dinner, movies or shopping. Today, I canned sweet pickles and cinnamon bread & butter pickles the old fashioned way. Yum ! (Though I can't eat but one daily !) Country life is wonderful…like Heaven, slow, southern, casual lifestyles. No cabs, trains, buses - except those tourist buses which drive through to the Marine base or ocean (Wilmington, NC), etc. Anyway, we are a nice place to visit if you're ever in the area…and we have a guest room, as there are no hotels in our town either…there is one bed and breakfast though, 15 minutes from our home. Now that I have fully described my living environment, come on down, y'all ! We'll leave the light on for ya ! Angie

WOW, Invitations to Wisconsin, AND North Carolina!!! Keep this up, and when I retire, I should be able to haul my camper all over this wonderful country and stay in people's driveways…Hee Hee
I too am a coutry boy at heart. I drove truck for a year and was in every "Big" city in the country. Can do it, but did not enjoy it…LOL
Currently, I live in a very small community that has everything within about 2 blocks. We have 5 churches, 4 restaurants, My doctors office, a library, the school, the fire department, a hardware, a grocery, a pharmacy, auto parts store, and a Ford dealership…all within 2 blocks. What more can I ask for. ( I could do without having to dodge all the Amish buggies though). To be honest, as soon as my son graduates from high school in 2 more years, I'm going to build my "cabin" in the woods. Me, my 2 dogs, and 2 cats will then hide away, and live with nature.

Thanks for the invite Angie. You sound like Motel 6. I rarely drive north. If I go home we fly. My husband is from Rhode Island and when we go to visit, we fly as well. But I'm with you. There's nothing like the country. I remember once as a little girl traveling with my Mom and Dad, we went to New York City and I unwillingly crossed the street. There were SO many people that the crowd shoved me with them. I remember being scared out of my wits, I couldn't find my Mom or Dad. I also remember crossing Chicago by car. That is a BIG city. My Father had taken the wrong exit and we were going around and around in the getto of the city and THAT WAS SCARY as well. All the thugs were around and examining us up and down, especially that our car had foreign plates, no need telling you that all the doors were locked and we were all praying to find the right road to get out of there. I never wanted to go back there either. Oprah can stay there. I have no desire to visit. I also went to Denver, Colorado. Now there you're talking beautiful scenery. I have nothing but the best souvenirs from that trip.
I guess we better get back to the support purpose of this site. We kind of got lost a bit here.
