Well I just went to see the doc abuot the problems I have been having with my Humalog. It didn't want to kick in for about 4hrs then causing huge drops (34 lowest). She switched me to a new insulin Apidra which allows a little more leeway as far as sliding scale. Just wondering if anyone else was on this and how well it's worked for them. So far It's been great for me. Fasting this morning was 138. This after a high yesterday morning before starting of 484.

I'm on Temporary medical assistance until my Disability is finalized so the Doc gave me samples. Once they run out of samples I'm sure I'll have to go back on the generic. This is just a stepping stone until I can get the pump. I just wanted to see if anyone had tried this and knew of any complications. My uncle went through the VA for all of his medications until he passed away 2yrs ago. I'm sure if they were able to try some of the newer meds on him he might have been able to stabilize. It took 3 1/2 yrs to get approval for his pump then another 9mos to even get it. He was on dialysis for the last year of his life and he passed away 3mos after he started pump therapy. The VA is wonderful as far as staff goes, his nurses and doctors were so sympathetic and helpful, But as far as medications and treatment options you are very limited. Best of luck to you. I hope everything is working out for you.

JUST SO YOU KNOW THAT THE VA HAS CHANGED A LOT FROM 2 YEARS AGO.. DIABETES IS NOW ON THE TOP OF THEIR SERVICE,,, NOW IF YOU ARE A DIABETIC IN THE VA YOU GO TO THE TOP OF THE LINE AN THEY DO TRY THE NEW MEDS IF THEY WORK, AN THE VETS CAN GET PUMPS NOW, BUT A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO IT WAS VERY HARD TO GET… 10 YEAR AGO MOST VETS COULD NOT EVEN BE SEEN, TODAY IF YOU PUT YOUR TIME IN YOU ARE NOW TAKEN CARE OF…I FORGOT TO SAY THAT THE KIDNEY IS ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS TO GO WHEN YOU HAVE DIABETES AN IN MY CASE I AM DOWN TO ONLY 1/2 OF ONE. BUT THEY HAVE BEEN GIVING ME A MED THAT SEEMS TO BE HELPING KEEP THAT 1/2 WORKING AN I AM STILL HERE.. SO THEY DO TRY THE NEW MEDS…

So glad to hear that you are receiving good treatement. I didn't mean to sound insensitive. Most VA services are amazing and I now that part of my uncle's troubles were because he had been non-compliant in his care before. The doctor spoke with my aunt after he passed away and said that alot of the problems that came from his approval were because he wasn't always taking care of himself. They were willing to help but only if he was willing to be helped. There are so many vets out there that need help and are willing to do anything to get it that his attitude kind of put him low on the list. If he wasn't willing to comply with the doctor's by taking his medications as it was how was an expensive pump going to help? You are also soooo right that the VA has changed from a few years back. My cousin is also a vet and received a medical discharge when he was diagnosed with a severe form of PTSD. They are doing amazing things to help him. Not just with medical care but also with vocational training and reintegration therapy. I really hope that I did not come across as too negative of the VA itself as it's programs are vital to our servicemen, active and retired. I just know that with some things they are a little slow to act because of the governmental regulations and standards they must meet. I wish you luck in your continuing treatment and pray that little ol kidney keeps on truckin. So far I have only mild kidney problems and we are hoping that this new treatment plan will forstall anymore for a long time. I just turned 31, I want to make it to at least 50…ha!
