I know I wrote about this once, but my dr suggests peanut butter when my bg is low and before I go to bed. My bg was very low this am and I had to drive so I downed the penut butter. It is good, I just have trouble swallowing it.

okay, I had to make sure I read the comments before I added my two cents is it because you are eating it from a spoon maybe if you had it on a cracker it would help. Someone else suggested that you eat it on a banana. Have you tried it like that? Do the best you can.

I can understand where you are coming from cuz I also love peanut butter but have trouble swallowing it sometimes, always have to have a drink right on hand to wash it down is what I do. Just make sure you can wash it down maybe? Or have you tried that and it does not work for you also? *HugS* Sheila

I love Peanut Butter. I keep a jar at my desk at work. That is when I seem to go low. I eat some Peanut Butter to bring it back up because I can not always get away from my desk to get juice or fruit.

Ok, I might be off my rocker here (as I am also addicted to PB) but if you dont like PB, dont eat it. Instead of PB try a few saltine crackers. Alittle jam on them. If I didnt like PB, I wouldnt eat PB even if the doctor ordered me to eat it. Come on now. Eat what you like. within reason. If you are low, take a half cup of fruit juice or somthing like that. If you are worried about a low at night, eat a few saltines. A few carbs should help you get through the night. Might I also recomend that you have someone wake you up a few nights to test about 3:00 am just to see what your BS is at that time. If you dont like PB, you are not going to stick to eating it. Life is too short to be forced into eating what you dont like. So eat somthing you do like.
Again, Im addicted to PB and find it strange that you dont like it.
Could be mental.
Good luck.

I did not say I do not like pb, I said I have difficulty swallowing it. I have cerebral palsy and I choke easily.
Do not tell me I could be mental…that is uncalled for

I didnt say you were mental,
That is also uncalled for.
If you cant swollow it, than eat somthing you can swollow.
Why be forced to swollow something you cant swollow?
Find something else to eat that goes down easier.

PB is great. Just watch the fat. My fav brand is Jiff and it is hard to eat Jiff reduced fat, but it is also the best lower fat PB I've had. When I eat the full fat stuff, I just measure it out. I love it on bananas, and graham crackers.

I am also a peanut butter addict, but having pancreatitis it is hard to avoid the high fat content of the wonderful stuff. I have found a great brand (that does cost a little more)that is even better than the regular store brand. It's called Naturally More, distributed by SNACLite, LLC. Stats - Total fat 19%, Carbs 8g, Sugars 2g, Protein 10g. It is also loaded with Omega-3, Omega-6. Just a little FYI if anyone is interested!

I have taken to having trail mix before bed. I get a bag from BJ'S that has nuts, rasins and M&M. One serving is 17 carbs. I can nibble while watching TV !!

Protein is good. My cousin (a children's hospital RN) says it is the best snack before going to bed. Peanut butter is good for the soul.

What brand of Peanut Butter do you suggest buying?

2009-07-10 09:06:35 -0500 Report

any brand will do. do NOT feel you have to buy a diabetic specific brand. i was recently dx t1. my partner went out and bought all of this high dollar diabetic food. it's all a scam. he bought a jar of fifty-50 brand peanut butter. it has 7 grams of carbs and cost $6.85 for a 18 oz jar. now compare that to the store brand. same size-$1.59. now this is the kicker. it has SIX grams of carbs. so do all of the other national brands. so in theory the diab brand is pretty poor for diabetics. like i said, i'm t1 and have to count EVERY carb and cover it with insulin. so that makes absolutely no damn sense! and this goes for almost all sugar-free, diabetic foods. learn to read the food labels and you will save yourself a ton of money, and be healthier. just my 2 cents. and the funny thing is my endo, dietician and regular physician all agree,

i agree with pretty much everything you said. i have seen though that some pb brands add sugar while others don't. so watch for that.

then also, not all pb brands use the same serving size. 2 Tbsp is pretty standard. but you might find that some try to make it look like it's less calories/carbs/whatever by listing a smaller serving size.

2009-07-10 13:32:37 -0500 Report

I buy regular Jiff or Simply Jiff. No other brands for me. I have read the labels on both, but can't remember the carb or fat content of either. Sorry.

I happen to be a peanut butter addict! lol Which is good in a way because it is a very good source of protein. I also love eating peanut butter and banana sandwiches. I know of some people who will spread peanut butter on a banana and eat it that way. Then you are getting your protein and potassium at the same time. I know that some people have trouble swallowing it because of it's consistency, but do your best.

i swear by nuts of ANY sort. i eat either a pb sandwich or a handful of mixed nuts everyday. it really does wonders for my bg levels.
