I had been having my A1c for the last 6months come in at 6.2. I was told that I should be controlling it with diet. I have been really worried about it and I started testing in March and went I went to the lab the beginning of June my test came in that I had dropped from 6.2 to 5.8! Now to maintain.

Oh, 6.2 by diet alone? Hmm, my last one was 6.1 and on Metformin 750mg, was pleased but the Dr. wanted it lower. Does this mean a 6. only by diet? I have been on BS testing for 3 years, with poor results, on a diet, then with Metformin 500, then later, up to 750mg. NOT REAL HIGH, not over 190, but know that is not good. I have also added swimming to my exercise program and I was amazed that it dropped to 107, and 87 in the same day— a FIRST! I give the swimming more credit than the few pounds that I have lost in the past 2 months, it seemed to make a tad of difference, but 3 days of swimming, I was amazed.
Maybe since I am coming out of this tense depression, and swimming too, I can gradually get off of meds. I was borderline for 50 years so it was hard to accept the fact that I MUST really get serious and quit denying it as I do NOT want any complications. So far I think that I am in pretty good shape. Trouble is, with winter coming (yes, I KNOW—haha) we have no indoor pool, so will just have to play it by ear, I guess! I still get very tired with little exercise. Pat Roth

I have tried cinnamon, but only because I like it, but usually with a tad of sugar, so—I don't know about the capsules—if they are handled by hand, counted out, I am not sure that they would be clean enough—there wouldn't be anyway to sterilize them. As I have said, I was trained in a hospital and am suspicious of germs—-non-sterilized articles, especially when they go into the mouth. You know how important it is to WASH your HANDS—that is how my mind thinks, anyway! Good luck and hope you find some answers! PR

Good for you. I think exercise does more than all supplements. And now you've seen it for yourself.

I would start looking around for some other activity which you could do when winter sets in. Or maybe even find an indoor pool?

Call it cross-training.

Sounds like a great idea and with our Wellness Center burning to the ground this week, I will look for other activities. Maybe I am finally up to walking some, at least, start slow—Thanks PR

I think that I have come quite a ways, since this entry about 4 weeks ago, and didn't know if I could ever get it down around 100 or not—but now I have. But with this pneumonia again, I can't walk again, so maybe my weight loss of 32 # is helping! I don't know for sure, does anyone else ever know anything for sure in this zig-zag life of diabetis??! That's amazing. Keep up the good work. Showed this to my brother to prove it can be done. His doc told him if he wanted to go lower he'd have to start on meds. He's holding steady and 6.7. After reading this he said maybe he can try a little harder with his diet after all. The Doc had him discouraged. Glad to see someone so committed. Best of luck!

What kind of results do you have? I am trying to find people to compare with, get a better grip and understanding of this disease. Pat Roth

How long have you been a diabetic? It sounds like it has been awhile, to me, a novice at this! Pat Roth

since around 2002. I was first dianosed when i got my first test for it but believe I had it yrs before n never got tested. it runs a lot in my family, so I should of got tested sooner. But like so many others waited till after the complications settled in. After doing research on this found out it could of been 10 yrs before I was diagnosed when it actually started.

Congrats on such a good report. Keep up the good work. Your diet does help in keeping your numbers down.

I think you have had the most dramatic success, what did you do to get yours to drop? Are there any specific foods you specifically had to drop? I I think I have to add vegetables and beans and drink a lot of water. At least 40 ozs,

In answer to oyur question, I've seen similar A1C drops in postings on the forums, when I first started reading them it just amazed me and I did not think I could do it that quickly.

There is a lot of experience here, I asked questions and I went through and read a lot of the archives and used that and information I found to try and hack together something that works for me.

and I'm still experimenting and figure that is one of my new hobbies now.

I'm takng a number of different supplements and some vitamins, some are to try and improve insulin sensitivity. I figured that at the time of dx that my body was a wreck and that I needed to supplement my diet until I could get my diet and exercize regimen established.

I figured 6 months to a year. My goal was to improve insulin sensitivity as I want some flexibility in food choices. I'm eating more fish, nuts, veggies, cheese, multi grain products, yogurt, etc no white bread, and much less processed foods. No regular pop, no sugary drinks, potatoes are mostly out, no Dairy Queen, no Blue Moon Hot Fudge Sundays, no bags of jelly beans and licorice.

I'm taking Apple Cider Vinegar pills, Cinnamon in pill form, Gymnema, Evening Primrose Oil,Agaricus, and drinking metamucil, those are the primary ones for trying to impact BGL. I take one dose 2x a day and last week when I cut back to half my average BGL jumped about 30 points.

What I've noticed is that my BGL comes down fairly quickly after eating and that I've been able to have more flexibility in food choices. tonight we are having tuna melts,

Thanks I don't drink soda but I drink sweetened tea. If I buy it from a fastfood place I make it half & half .I love french fries and I am getting to the point of adding the calories and I know that I cannot afford to eat McDonald's. I thought I could eat the chicken sandwich but oh well thanks for the information.

Antique-Dave 2009-07-03 08:46:45 -0500 Report

I used to drink the sweet tea all the time, but I have not had one since March, not worth it to waste carbs on sweet tea for me, french fries, Once I had fries with an Arby sandwich but my BGL was at 80 otherwise I've only had a couple at a time, I'm still treading lightly with potatoes it all depends on what my meter is telling me. If I'm low enough I'll have a few more carbs, as long as I'm under 140 after two hours.

From what little I have noticed about myself, was eating white potatoes! I was shocked as I had always considered them a safe food for me, due to colon problems——but they lit me up 60 points in one 2 hr. after, setting!

Right now I am having a lot less trouble, tested 102 after eating lunch, and I shouldn't have—I ate a "roasten ear" and 2 canned hot tamalies. Maybe my weight loss has helped, not exercising much right now. Just thankful!!! PR
