I am so bored with having diabetes. Every day is the same, am I HI or LOW ? Next comes out the calculator. Figuring carbs, fats, proteins, you got the picture. Juggling my food, figuring what I can eat or not.
Right now I'm sitting in my chair, I got out the abacus, ready to spend the next 30 minutes or so figuring out what to eat.
I want a hot dog with mustard and sauerkraut, 2 or 3 of them. I also want a chilli cheese burger ! I want to go to Weinerschitzel' s and eat through the menu !
They don't have that where I live. Thank God!
Well, I do have a nice piece of fish, spinach, a few blueberries blended with a few strawberries.
I guess I'm trapped in diabetes land. Help me !

Hubby prepared dinner last night (I get home late from volunteering at the library)…and he made hot dogs! He made his with buns, tater tots and I added a small green salad. (Trying to get him to eat healthier and more greens.) I had mine bunless, with a small helping of sweet potato fries and a large green salad. BG this morning was 113! Happy day!

I WAS bored in diabetes land until I found a way to be unbored…like in another recent post.about dark chocolate..and enjoying a chocolate mousse every once in a while..sweetened with stevia..and spices…spices are wonderful..you can make a chicken breast with Italian seasonings one day…and the next with Indian…or Mexican…I think discovering spices…and letting yourself induldge in a low carb treat now and again is a great way to get out of a food rut..

There are so many foods that opened up for me when I started cooking for my diabetes. I am not a hot dog fan, but Mexican food is my dream world. I have found ways to lower the carbs in many of those meals and still get the satisfaction of eating what I miss.

I do find I get bored when I just eat the same thing. I am very bad at that, I must have change to keep sane. I get burnt out on salads sometimes and had to start finding recipes to make them exciting again. It really helps me overcome the bored feeling.

Sometimes though, you just have to have what you crave....then you find that it's not as good as you remember. At least that is what usually happens to me.

You could indulge in a hot dog (or 2 or 3 of them) with mustard and sauerkraut but without the bun for a low-carb meal that won't spike your BG…although the processing in the hot dog and the sodium may not be the healthiest. Spinach with fish and berries sounds like a really good meal to me. (I would probably add some cheese too) I made salads for dinner tonight with leftover chicken from last night and roast pork from the day before. So sorry you're feeling bored…I don't have time to get bored…too many things to do and not enough time.

You need to be gentler in your reply. I'm happy that you are so busy that you don't have time for boredom.
Some of us are put away by our family, with no choices of our own.Our days are extremely boring. For you to assume that we flitter around and cause our own boredom is just wrong Find out about the person first before you throw out a glib reply..

We always have choices…just not the ones that we would ideally choose to have. What we choose to do or not do about ANY situation is entirely up to us. Your stating that I assumed "we flitter around and cause our own boredom" in your own words, "is just wrong." I choose to not be bored about my life nor about my diabetes. Diabetes does not define me nor who I am nor what I can accomplish. It's my choice, despite my situation, despite my environment, despite my trials. I've had this posted on my profile now for some time: "Not only our actions but also our omissions become our destiny" Heinrich Zimmer from "The King and the Corpse".
I hope you can make the right choices too.

I ended up eating my fish, berries and spinach. I have to admit it was delicious.
I always end up eating what I should, but I can dream it's a hot dog world !

Have a hotdog!!!!..They are NOT the best things for you..but they are very low carb AND you can buy them without nitrates now…and Hebrew National hot dogs are a good choice to avoid those "nasty cuts of meat" other hot dog makers grind up and they have no artificial fillers…Buy a pack..separate them and freeze them individually…I get an occasional hankering for a hot dog…and have one Hebrew National with mustard and kraut..hold the bun…I have done this twice since being diagnosed in October..

Sounds like a good idea to me. I love Hebrew National and it's not the bun that makes me happy it's the hot dog !

LOL. I'm right where you are. Our minds must be joined today. I'm thinking that the local theme parks should develop a diabetes land for Halloween. That might be enough to scare some kids into making better eating choices. I wish I could help you. Unfortunately, I am a rather picky eater and can't give you much support on the wonderful "yummy" recipes everyone else seems to enjoy. I eat the same small group of food choices over and over. I'm still waiting for someone to invent a no carbohydrate, no calorie flavor spray that will turn my green beans into a yummy tasting decadent dessert. Do you think that will happen anytime soon?

calayx 2015-04-06 20:15:56 -0500 Report

Per usual, I'm stuck in a food rut too! It's easier to eat the same things over and over again. I already know portion control, carbs, proteins, etc. So it's faster and easier to eat the same thing over and over, and over ! May be one day I'll have the time to venture out and explore !!
