The Diabetes Summit continues and for those who want to find out more about how a low carb diet paired with high fat (healthy fats) can benefit more than our glucose levels, but our heart and vascular health as well. Jimmy Moore lost considerable weight by starting with the Atkins diet and working into his own method to reduce his insulin resistance. Very interesting discussion: http://thediabetessummit.com/special-guest-ji...

My sugar is better controlled when I'm not stuffing my face with carbs. And just try and take my bacon from me .. come on .. (B.E.G.) Its about balance. I use a food logging program to help me keep in line with fats, carbs and protein. It has helped me a lot. But the first thing I tell a new diabetic is get rid of the bad carbs, kick sugar to the curb (including fake), and exercise.

I don't eat bacon at all but not because of diet but because of religious practices - I keep kosher. However, I agree with the rest of what you had to say. I also use a food logging program, which I find helpful, and I am on a 1000 calorie diet.

I use some of the Atkins products, but not many… My nutritionist warns against them because they are so high in fat. I just don't feel like I can go sugar free, fat free, carb free… why bother even eating?? For me, at least for now… I choose my battles…

You don't have to go carb free to go low carb..many people find atkins hard to stick to…but you can cut back on fruit and grains..everything helps…just because you don't want to go full blown Atkins doesn't mean you cant apply a few of the principals to help you…it doesn't have to be all or nothing..

Low carb, yes. High fat (Atkins), absolutely not. Just my opinion, but as a nurse, before I worked corrections, I was a staff nurse in a Dr's office and saw way to many ppl with such high cholesterol and triglycerides from the Atkins Diet. I mean I could actually tell the moment I drew their blood.

I'm low-carb and pay no attention to the fats. My triglycerides are 56 and total lipids under 200.

whoop whoop!!!!…But the fats help many people..because I keep my carbs very low and eat high fat..my liver health has improved dramactically…I literally burned the fat out of my fatty liver…but if you are doing well on the diet you are on..God Bless..

If you view this interview, you would find that there are actually more connections between carbs and triglycerides. It is very interesting.

So high protein? That has its own issues yes?
I have gotten off statins and achieved ideal cholesterol ratios by eating low carb and high fat. YMMV

I like Jimmy Moore…many people don't take him seriously because..he continues to battle with his weight and health despite being low carb…but many things can interfere with weight loss even on a low carb diet,, hormone imbalances, bad flora in the belly…he has nailed it down as of late..he had fertitlity problems for a while as well (hormone issues)..but now his wife is expecting..I think THAT is why it is so important to listen to as many interviews as possible..because overall health is what we should be aiming for..NOT just keeping BG levels down..I haven't started listening to interviews yet today..Was busy finishing up a paper and getting my hubby out the door to work…but I will listen to him first..

Weight is not always the indicator. His blood work sounds amazing in all areas. He did say he is still working on insulin resistance. But I rather imagine that it will be ongoing in those of us who really have a struggle with extreme resistance. I really enjoyed how he talked about how doctors seem to just look at numbers and not what make up those numbers. His explanation on cholesterol was really great.

I really appreciate what he had to say about cholesterol. Insulin resistance is clearly a big issue for me and I found what he had to say very encouraging. I think it is sad that we have to go to our doctor "armed" to defend ourselves against the ever ready prescription pad.

My old doctor was afraid of me…because I snapped at him every time he suggested a new med…My new doctor THANK GOD believes in trying dietary changes to address health issues before cutting scripts..and if you are looking for a new doctor google functional medical doctors and see what pops up..then check to see which ones take your insurance,,,,

Pegsy 2015-03-26 14:14:12 -0500 Report

Well what do you know? There are two near me. I will definitely look them up on my insurance. It sure would be be nice to make this change.

GabbyPA 2015-03-26 13:36:35 -0500 Report

If we want them to really listen to us, I do suppose going in with more than just a "I heard" list would be better. Mine is not open to other opinions other than his, so now that I have some insurance (finally) I am going to see if I can find one who is on the same page as me so it's not always a fight.

Pegsy 2015-03-26 13:38:34 -0500 Report

Yeah, I am seriously considering finding a new doctor. I am definitely not looking forward to the search.
