Hi all. Just wanted to start out and let you all know that I'm not diabetic but it runs in my family and my sister has type 2.
I joined this site today after having searched for a site which offered information and recipes for diabetics. I was impressed when I found Diabetic Connect. It offered everything I was looking for and the member discussions was an extra plus.
I'm concerned about my sister's health. Last year she came for a visit and I was shocked at her appearance. She became so skinny but it also looked like she had lost some muscle mass. Then later I found out that she hadn't taken her medication for months. At the time she had no insurance and couldn't afford it after a divorce.
She finally went to see the doctor after she developed some nerve damage in her leg. She's now on 4 different meds and is regaining a healthier weight. Still does not have her blood sugar down to an ideal level but it's much lower than it was.
She's coming to spend next weekend with us and I've been trying to search for recipes that she can eat.
She gave me a long list of things she says she can't have including:
Sugar of course or artificial sweeteners
Anything with flour in it including pasta and breads
Orange juice
Some fruits because of the natural sugars
I did come up with a few things I could cook for dinners and breakfast but am stumped for snacks and maybe a dessert.
That's where I am right now and am looking forward to getting to know you all.
And I will be referring my sister to this site.

Your sister is very lucky that you are looking out for her. I hope it will bring you guys closer as you learn together. Good to have you here.

There is a great desert here called Lemon Whip. One of my favorites for sure. It does have artificial sweetener, but if she's okay with stevia, you can use that. I also do blueberries over a blend of cream cheese and vanilla yogurt with a splash of lemon zest on top. The trick will be to keep portions controlled and find out what works with her glucose levels.

As for snacks have some nuts on hand that she likes. Or lunch meat and cheese sticks are also good. I love dill pickles, too. Sunflower seeds are my go to snack, in the shell because then it takes me a while to work through them. I also enjoy sugar free jello with yogurt mixed in. If she's sensitive to the artificial sweeteners, you may not want to do that one.

Thank you Gabby. Those snax and desserts sound great.
When I spoke with her last night we decided that we would go to the grocery store together when she comes to visit, a relief for me.
She loves nuts and cream cheese and did admit to me that she could eat some of the foods in the list but said she'd rather just stay away from them.
Now I've got a craving for the foods you all have suggested and am thinking of making something with blueberries lol.

Blueberries are some of my favorites and my hubby's too. I can't go wrong with those little purple pearls.

Hi again Butterfly,
You had asked for snack recipes…I completely forgot. Here's a
couple you might consider. Apple slices with peanut butter spread on them. A handful of nuts. Celery with either cream cheese or peanut butter on it. Yogurt…in your sister's condition I would suggest some fruit. Most berries. That's a good start. Hope she enjoys.
