Has anyone here taken abstention? I will be taking this several days prior to surgery…they said I would be ok to drive, but the bottle says may cause dizziness and drowsiness. I need to know before hand as where I live is across town from the facility where I will have surgery. If I take it at bedtime, will I still be " under the influence" in the morning?

Well I take it 3x' s a day. Total of 1800 mg everyday. I didn't have a bad reaction at all and it has helped my feet tremendously. I have to admit, I rarely have side effects from any medications that I take. Prayers for a speedy recovery.

I take Gabapentin at night and I have no problem in the morning just slow at getting up. I take it for Neuropathy. I should be taking it 3x a day but since it makes me tired and relaxed, I don't take it other times since I work.

I'm sure they would not even let me out the door unless someone was waiting for me. I will probably stay with my daughter until at least my first post-op checkup

No matter what, when you are going for surgery, it is always smart to have someone take you and bring you home.

I guess I'm unlike the others yet again, i take gabapentin in the evening and in the AM and have no problems with it whatsoever. I would however recommend that you stay at your daughters if you have that option and have her drive you to the hospital just as a safety till you see how the med reacts to you. or you to it. Best of luck, thinking of you.

I've taken and been on lots of different medication for various reasons. I can take most things without getting tired or dizzy including muscle relaxers but when I was on gabapentin it made me feel so tired I could and would fall asleep anywhere, even at my desk at work!… Even just taking two at night would have me beyond groggy the next morning. It may work different for you, but that was my experience. I hope that you take it a few times before going out and/or driving. I pray this helps you. - Donielle

Howdy Sue.
I used to take Gabapentin (aka "neurontin") a number of years ago to combat my burning neuropathy. I stopped taking it since it did nothing for my problem. I didn't have any problems driving at that time. I recommend if you do have any of those problems that you get a friend or family member to drive you there. Or if none of those are available, call a cab.

Praying you have a successful surgery

I already plan for my daughter to take me in,but I don't know yet what time I need to be there. I may just have to stay the night at her place because of the additional meds they want me to take, I may need someone to wake me to be sure I take them on time if the gabapentin puts me out.

At least I'll have 2 days to try it out to see what effect it will have on me. It depends on what time I have to show at the hospital for surgery.

Dear sue,
It does cause sleepiness and dizzy feelings. Do as the others and myself reccomended. Take at night early so you can sleep it off. I
was on it for about 2 years. The side effects got the best of me and I became allergic to it. Don't worry about it though. It only happens to a select few. I just happened to be one of the few. Hugs, VL

Thanks everyone. That is what I needed to know. Will make sure I don't take it too late in the evening, although night before surgery I have other meds to take at 11:00 pm May have to stay at my daughters' place then.

I take 900 mg every night. Some mornings it may take me two cups of coffee to get my motor running. As far as driving goes I have no clue … the State of California in its infinite wisdom revoked my driving privileges 2 years ago.

I use to supervise meds at the facility where I worked and gabapentin was always given at night…during the final med distribution at 8 pm…it was policy because it knocks out so many that take it…

I take Gabapentine and it puts my lights out. So I take it at night. I would not be able to drive at all taking this drug. I love that it really puts me to sleep.
