Has anyone ever heard of using baking soda for controlling blood glucose…it is suppose to have something to do with the PH level in the body being too acidic…yadda yadda yadda…came across a few doctors on youtube talking about the positive effects…are these people quacks????…

Keeping your body alkaline is not a bad thing, I have not heard that it helps glucose, but I have been told (not researched too much) that it helps prevent cancer because cancer requires an acid body to grow.

Sadly, most proteins, at least red meats, are acid based and you can take all the alkaline things you want, but if you eat acid foods, then the effort is pointless. There are lists of alkaline foods and acid foods out there, and if you can add another set of restrictions to your diet, go for it.

It is helpful, and I used to have a list of the foods to avoid. I may have to dig it back out and take a look at it, now that I have revamped my diet.

As someone said it's best to stay away from anything that claims to be a cure all. I read somewhere that baking soda in large dosages affects the acid level in your stomach hampering digestion.

Perhaps not so wacko. Upon looking up "PH levels and kidney disease" (since I knew that dialysis centers use a lot of bicarbonate) I discovered a study in "Journal of Environmental and Public Health" on Pub. Med (hardly a wacko theorist site).

To quote the conclusion of that article: "Alkaline diets result in a more alkaline urine pH and may result in reduced calcium in the urine, however, as seen in some recent reports, this may not reflect total calcium balance because of other buffers such as phosphate. There is no substantial evidence that this improves bone health or protects from osteoporosis. However, alkaline diets may result in a number of health benefits as outlined below
1.Increased fruits and vegetables in an alkaline diet would improve the K/Na ratio and may benefit bone health, reduce muscle wasting, as well as mitigate other chronic diseases such as hypertension and strokes.
2.The resultant increase in growth hormone with an alkaline diet may improve many outcomes from cardiovascular health to memory and cognition.
3.An increase in intracellular magnesium, which is required for the function of many enzyme systems, is another added benefit of the alkaline diet. Available magnesium, which is required to activate vitamin D, would result in numerous added benefits in the vitamin D apocrine/exocrine systems.
4.Alkalinity may result in added benefit for some chemotherapeutic agents that require a higher pH.
From the evidence outlined above, it would be prudent to consider an alkaline diet to reduce morbidity and mortality of chronic disease that are plaguing our aging population. One of the first considerations in an alkaline diet, which includes more fruits and vegetables, is to know what type of soil they were grown in since this may significantly influence the mineral content. oh no not quacky - the PH balance is very important — as we get THAT under control — it helps Diabetes— dunnno if it's actually a cure - but it sure helps

wacky it is … the bodies pH levels are tightly maintained by our kidneys ( but what we consume has no effect on our blood's pH levels, it can, however, affect the pH levels of our urine which is of no consequence to our bodies pH level.

I have heard that most people's PH level is too acidic, not just diabetics. I've never heard of using baking soda to reverse that but I can see how one could go there, mentally. Could it be that simple? In my experience, the best solutions usually are. Simple, that is.

I keep thinking to myself if it was really THAT easy why wouldn't doctors recommend it…then I remember these are the same people telling diabetics to eat 6 servings of whole grains everyday…soooo…they could be quacks..but didn't 99% of the medical community think Dr. Atkins was a quack…really need an entire day to research this one…wont have an entire day for a couple more weeks…

Drs by and large don't recommend it since it is not based on the medical model which promotes Pharmaceuticals. BigPharma has a lot of Drs eating out of the same trough and getting payola for Rxing more meds.

I believe Atkins was labelled a quack because he didn't adhere strictly to a medication only approach to diabetes and weight control.

oh he was considered a quack for much more than wasn't just about him using diet…He was considered a quack because it was "impossible" for the body to use fat for energy…carbs were necessary and saying anything else was scientific blasphemy…remember I was on this diet for two years starting 12 years ago…Before it became really mainstream…people were crucifying this man…even after his death…but you know what they say…most they scientist or artist..aren't really appreciated in their own lifetimes…wink wink..
