Interesting fact about B12 supplements...
I always buy my supplements from one source…Mainly because he doesn't just explain why his supplements are necessary but generally doesn't use the same kinds that are in the brands you can buy at the drug store…I realized at diagnosis when put on Metformin I would need a B12 supplement…and no my doctor didn't tell me this..he was useless…I found this out for myself while googling my meds…I checked all of my supplements and found that my hair skin and nail supplement has a nice amount of B12…so I was good…was running low so I went to the site I generally order from to check out to see if there were any good deals and watched a video put up my the manufacturer…I am not so stupid as to believe anything I hear anymore..so I researched it and he was giving accurate information…The vast majority of B12 supplements sold in the store are worthless…they are destroyed in the stomach before they can make it into the intestines for absorption…this is why doctors recommend B12 injections for people that need B12 supplementation…I was glad that his B12 supplements found a way around this issue making his B12 bioavailable…I just thought that because so many of us take Metformin that I should throw this out there…

Hey Jibber Jabber — Is there any way you can share your B12 source either in this thread or in a PM? I'm a little miffed that this wasn't discussed with my PCP &/or diabetes educator. After reading quite a bit on this site — I started doing research & have come to the same conclusions you write above. I have yet to have my appointment w my new endo - should I bring it up there or go ahead & locate my own supply?
If someone is able to get the B12 injection - is that a better form than a supplement? (counting the B12 supplement you get from your person you like)? **CURIOUS**
I see the link now — but still question on if I can get B12 shots if that would be the same or better than the B12 that you write about. However, I may be putting the cart before the horse if being unsure of weather I have a B12 deficiency. Although, if I understand this thread — if I take Metformin — B12 is advised to be taken, right?
Great discussion — just hope I'm absorbing correctly ;)
When B12 was prescribed for me, the doctor emphasized that I should buy the Sub-lingual B12 tablets (It dissolves under the tongue and is absorbed better.)
I had the gastric bypass 10 years ago and take a boat-load of supplesupplements every day and I top take my B12 sublingually. It worked so well taking it that way my DoctorDoctor now has me taking every three days and my levels are great.
I take B12 injected right now because I'm seeing a weight doctor who uses the B12 as a base to provide other vitamins that are supposed to help with weight loss. She told me the same thing you just posted about absorption. I've always taken a B12 under my tongue in the morning, but never any more. She indicated that when I stop with her shots, I need to do B12 more than once a day to ensure I'm getting enough. I hope I can find B12 injects after I'm done seeing her, as her prices are out of this world.
Jolene,
I am not so sure you are being told the truth. Did this woman tell you that you have pernicious anemia.? If she did not, I would be suspicious.
My mother had pernicious anemia. That means the factor in the stomach needed to extract B12 from meat is not being produced. If you do not suffer from this condition, taking B12 under your tongue will give you all the B12 you need. You already absorb B12. If you take metformin or are older, taking the extra B12 under the tongue is enough. No shots needed.
All these comments below are so confusing. How does one know which one to use, and if it is even doing any good, no matter which one you use? Sometimes the more I learn, the more confused I get. lol
I have been reading about oral liquid B12 drops and films and other "dissolvable" orally taken forms of B12 on line for hours this morning…From what I can gather most of the newer research says they are not absorbed into the body any better than regular vitamins…again the way to go is either with B12 shots…or protected B12 in pill form…but you may NOT need additional B12…ask your doctor at your next visit ask him to test you…I didn't post this to upset anyone or confuse them…I did however want to get the information out there…
Hi Cherokee,
It is quite common that people as they age lose their ability to absorb B12. If they are taking metformin, that is an additional risk as metformin
over time can prevent proper absorption of B12. The solution is really simple, cheap and easy to do. You could get a blood test, but the standards for B12 blood tests aren't very good. That is not necessary. Go to Walgreens and get either liquid B12 or dissolvable B12 tablets to put under the tongue. The B12 goes directly into your blood stream. It is absorption in the stomach that is the problem. So you don't want to swallow a B12 pill. Get the largest one you can get 5,000, when those are gone, you can get half that strength the next time. It is very difficult to overdose on B12. You don't need to worry about that. You may find you have more energy after you are taking them for a while.
B12 is very important to your body for many reasons. It is a good insurance policy. Ask your doctor about it, see what he really knows.
Thanks, this sounds like the best way to go. Had blood work today, but no test for B12. But won't know the results until sometime next week.

Do you know if you are B12 deficient?
A simple blood test can answer that. If you've been on metformin for a while your doctor really should order one.
B12 is one of the easiest micronutrients to get naturally … 4 ounces of beef, 3 oz of sardines (my favorite sources) contain at least 100% of your daily requirements and is a much better way to get enough B12 (dairy products are also good sources)

Awesome link & information on B12 haoleboy!!
Thanks SO very much for the share!
wow that is interesting, do you take cinnamon chromium? I heard that helps with the blood sugar.
yes..I take his cinnamon chromium supplement..but it sells so fast…the first time I bought it I bought the 60 tablets..1 months supply…went back to order more it was out of stock…had to get some from CVS…waited waited waited…then ordered the big bottle ..a 6 month supply..when I am down to two months I will start trying to reorder..
can u please name of the tablets B 12 Generally most of B complx tablets all vitamin B like b1 b6 b12 etc for whant of higher dose which tablet u used ? Alsoexcess ofviamin Bcomplex passes through urine by yellow colour ?
Hi Papana,
I would get the B 12 you put under your tongue. See my response to Cherokee. Oh yes the yellow color in the urine probably comes from a yellow dye in the
B complex you take. It doesn't come from the B12.
It helps you know if you for got to your B complex.
That explains why I cant find it!
I was told to take it sublinually. So I use dissolving pills or a liquid and place in under my tongue until it's absorbed. You are right, B-12 will not survive the digestive system.
What brand, & strength do you use and where do you get it?
I got mine from Swanson. http://www.swansonvitamins.com/swanson-premium-b-12-sublingual-liquid-1000-mcg-2-fl-oz-59-ml-liquid
The liquid I find to be the best, but the dissolving tablet are easier to take on the go. You cannot overdose on B-12 but getting a test done by your doctor will tell you if you need to be taking it and once you are taking it, that lab test will let you know if you are taking enough. I find most doctors are kind of "deer in the headlights" when you talk to them about it.
The effects of B-12 that I found were more energy. I was not taking it for any other purpose, but there might be other things it does.
The kind of B12 you put under tongue works well. You can buy it at
Walgreens. Either in liquid form or easily dissolvable tablet form. No special coating on the B12 is needed when dissolved under the tongue.
What brand do you use? I noticed one called Natrol 5000mcg 100 tablets, a strawberry flavor if I remember correctly.
Cherokee,
Any brand should do. B12 is not difficult to make. I probably
bought Walgreens as it was cheaper. Now I have Natures
Bounty. It was on sale.

Sorry I didn't know how to put up the individual video..this is a link to all his products…scroll down..they're several B12 products Only one has a video..
Great, thanks.
I think it was Gabby that said she takes a sublingual form of B-12. Did anything you read suggest that form?
there have been studies that show that sublingual B12 is absorbed no better than the oral form.
Steve
This is one study that needs to be questioned. I eat a lot of meat, could not absorb enough B12 to prevent B12 deficiency Anemia. Common in older people, not enough stomach acid any more.
sad face
no..but I will look into it…
I would be interested in your source. Private message me?
The link was requested..so I put it up..it has the source…I am not that computer savy could not figure how to put up the individual video..so I put up the link to all his products…They're several B12 products only one has a video…that was the original video I watched..
Interesting. Where do you get your B12? A health food store?
are you talking about enteric coated B12?
perhaps your forum name should be 'the missing link' ;)
namaste
Link
well kind of but I don't know..he talks of molecule size and protection…or as he describes it "protected B12"…and he has soooo many products that I will have to go to them and start clicking to see if I can find that video again..may take a while but I will put it up…I am NOT endorsing this mans products…I use them..but I am sure they're other places to get protected B12..and then they do have inhalable B12 (haven't really looked into that) and the good old fashioned B12 Shots…
Hi Jib Jab,
Good discussion. I now take B-12 and have been for the last 2 weeks. I bought mine at a health food store. That's. as pure as I can get. I also take biotin and extra D, extra vit C and fish oil. I do feel better. My hair and nails show the wear from hypothyroidism. and wearing false nails for so many years. I take extra D as its hard to get out in the sun when there isn't any. Mostly rain and snow. We're having a hard winter. Anyway thanks for posting. Its a good subject. VL
My nails have been weak and brittle since I was young…"bendy" as well when they did grow..I tried other hair nail and skin supplements,..all kinds of topical things…but nothing worked until I tried this mans formula…that is what sold me on him..he is no joke…he knows of what he speaks when it comes to bioavailability…my nails are amazing now…my hair is much better ..I have very fine hair and this product just made it amazing…and I have NOT had the sagging skin problem I had the first time I dropped 100 pounds on atkins all those years ago…my skin isn't perfect…but it isn't a hot mess either…I just trust this dude..
Hi Jib Jab
Who is this guy? Answer me in private mail. Don't want to cross anyone or break any rules. I would really appreciate. it. VL
