Atkins Bars The answer

The Atkins bars raise blood sugar because of the sugar alcohol in them. The product can be called sugar free but can have one of these sugar alcohols in it. Look for them on the label
Hydregenated Starch Hydrolysates.
They do not raise blood sugar as much as sugar, but each one is a little different. You can only deduct one half of the sugar alcohol from the carbohydrate count. Sugar is not fully digested, put the part that is will raise your blood sugar. Some sugar alcohols raise blood sugar 70% of sugar.
The label can still say sugar free!

I stay away from all the snack bars, protein bars, meal replacement bars, etc.. If I can't have a meal, I've got a ziploc bag of nuts and seeds in my purse that will tide me over till I get home. I don't buy into any of the sugar free stuff as I tried them years ago and they gave me bad gut problems. Heidi

I don' use them either. I keep nuts in my car. The gut problems are from the sugar alcohol. It doesn't completely digest and that is what it causes stomach p0roblems. It does raise blood sugar but not as much as sugar.

Hi Rosa,
You had asked me to list the ingredients to the Atkins bars. I couldn't
think of . better place than this. I chose the Cranberry Almond Bar as it seemed closest to what your trying to achieve with your own bars.
* soy protein* calcium * oat fiber * glycerin * almonds * martial
* palm kernel and palm oil * polydextrose gum Arabic * why protein
* dehydrated cranberries * sunflower seeds * whole grain rolled oats
* hydrolyzed gelatin * natural flavors * water * coconut.* soy lecithin
* vitamin mix ( vit.c, nipping, vit.B2, Thain, vita..B1, folic acid, Del-alpha-tocopheryl, vita e)
1serving size bar: 35 total grams
Total fat 6 g. 8%
Saturated fat 3g. 15%
Trans fat 0
Cholestrol 0
Sodium 100 micregrams. 4%
Potassium 70g. 2%
Total carbs 16g. 5%
Dietary. Fiber. 5g. 2o%
Sugar alcohol. 9g
Protein 10g. 20%
Calories 150
Net carbs. 2g
Total carbs 16g.- fiber - sugar alcohol 9g = 2net grams

Dr. Atkins may roll over in his grave but for me a bar at bedtime keeps me from dropping to low into hypoglycemia. And they keep me
regular. This should end the argument about the bars.. I hope the list of ingredients can be of some help to you, Rosa. VL

Thanks Valentine lady
The net carbs is really 8 not two. You can only subtract one half of the sugar alcohol.

I only copied what was on the box. I don't know
how to subtract net carbs, etc. I just know they would be horrible as a meal replacement or 2 or more day. But I will make that change in my diet plan and carb count at your suggestion. Thank you for that. I listed all of this for your benefit and hope it will help in someway to the development of
your own bars. I also wanted to stop all this banter
about something so silly. Maybe now we can move
on. Thank you for the list of sugar names used they're very helpful. By The way II've tried food before bed but where I currently reside that is not available to me. I wish I could…Thanks for all. VL

Rosalie, thank you so much for the names of the sugar derivatives. I will keep my eye on the packaging more now that I know the names.

The other thing about sugar-alcohols is that they can have a laxative or flatulent effect…not very pleasant. It's always wise to read the labels…I never bought in to the "Net Carb" promos.

What I don't appreciate about certain "low carb" foods such as Atkins bars, is that they flat out lie about the carb content…now some of them are more honest than others and will give a total carb count..then subtract fiber and half of the sugar alcohols to get the NET carb amount…Atkins products subtract ALL of the sugar alcohols as if they do not affect your BG levels at all…Dr. Atkins is turning over in his grave…

They do it because they can get away with it. Try Extend bars. They have Hi maize 260 and half the sugar alcohol. I think Extend bars taste like cardboard and don't have enough High maize 260 in them, but they are better than Atkins for blood sugar control. I will take my cheesecake any day.

I experimented with the extend "snacks" two nights in a row…they were yummy and I enjoyed them very much…but they had zero affect on my BG..and for $2.50 a bag (one snack)..they are way to costly for me to buy on a regular basis if they are not going to help…would rather snack on a handful of nuts..

Hi Jibber
That is why I have bulk Hi maize 260. It is dose dependent, a little dab will not do yah. I first found the Hi maize 260 when I first found Extend bars. I figured out what was in them and did my own experimenting. The Extend bars were created by a diabetes doctor and former CEO of the American Diabetes Association. she is Dr Francine Kaufman and she tests it on her diabetic patients.

Where do you buy your Hi maize 260? I saw it on amazon but it was for 50 lbs. I would like to try a small quantity at first to see how I do with it. 50 lbs. is a lot!!

RosalieM 2015-01-24 19:28:43 -0600 Report

I just bought 200 lbs, 4/50# bags whole sale. That is how confident I am in Hi maize 260. I tried to pay for advertising on this site so I could offer it. I would have to spend a minimum of $5000 to do that. Can't afford it and they said I would never recover it. Advertising is hell as it is so expensive and ineffective.
If you want to send me a private email, I can help you. I just want to help diabetics like my self with what I know.
It is so hard.
