I refuse to take a statin because I believe that I can lower and control my cholesterol through diet alone AND because they actually raise BG levels…I was just watching some mindless afternoon television ( You are NOT the father)…and saw a commercial for a law firm taking clients that claim that LIPITOR gave them Type 2 diabetes…was wondering what people's opinions were on this and if they have any further information to offer..

Jibber Jabber…my job is, basically, the over-65 market, selling Medicare products and other insurance products to the senior market. While I have no evidence at all of this, MANY of them claim that prescription drugs, of all kinds, caused them to develop type 2 diabetes. I take many prescription drugs myself, and one of my goals in 2015 is to get off of most of them, and see. My clients take high BP drugs, Chol drugs, triglicerides, and by name, the statins, acid reflux, metroprolol, lisinopril, and for heaven's sake, prednizone. This is what is reported to me by over 500 clients as we "chat."

When I was first put on one, my doctor then told me to up my insulin dose. My reading did go up and I had to use fast to get them down. Then about a week into taking them I could barley walk. Someone at work told me they had the same reaction, but ended up in the ER it got so bad. I stopped that day. Within a few days my legs went back to normal and my sugar readings leveled out.

I am on a statin, for now. I see my Endo in a couple of months, end of Feb or early March I believe, and have all my blood work redone at that time. If things are looking good then, I'm going to request coming off from it. Simply because I'm sick of taking as many meds as I take, and want to come off as many as I can and if down the road I need to go back on some I will.

It has to be so hard to prove since once we are out of whack, it tends to feed other issues. I have seen that as well as some depression medicines are claiming the same things. I don't know that it causes it, but it can contribute to it I'm sure right along with genes, food choices and's very complicated.

Lipitor did not give me Diabetes. I had diabetes before I took Lipitor. After a while I was changed to Crestor. Since bariatric surgery, I take neither Lipitor or Crestor and no Diabetic meds. I rely on exercise and diet to keep me on track.

Hi Jib Jab
I've seen those commercials as well. All I can say is after I had been a diabetic for 6 years I was put on Lipitor for high cholesterol. At the time I was something like 230. I did change my eating habits due to my diabetes and have lost 80 lbs. But am off diabetic medications as well. My latest A1C was 5.2 (just last week) my average BG is 110. I'm still on lipitor but my cholesterol is now 125. That was as of last week as well. It hasn't appeared to have affected me. My heart Dr. Insists I take it as high cholesterol and heart problems runs in our family. I admit I was afraid to use it in the beginning. Doesn't bothered me anymore. VL

I was about 230 when diagnosed with horrible ratios…refused the Lipitor…my numbers have greatly improved without it…and so have my ratios…I just for the life of me cant remember the numbers..I spent so much time discussing my diet in regards to my diabetes…we really didn't talk about much of anything else…but yeah…he is very pleased with all my bloodwork…

Jib Jab
You have every reason to be proud of yourself. You
set a goal and went for it. Maybe one day I"ll get off of lipitor too. Sure hope so. VL

Statins present more problems then they help. My doctor tried to get me on them even though my bp is fine.

I am NOT a doctor and know nothing of the correlation between high cholesterol and high blood pressure…but I can tell you that MY cholesterol was high..but my blood pressure was right on the money…so it IS possible not to have both problems..

My cholesterol is fine too.

Typical …right now they're two completely different schools of thought on statins and diabetes…some doctors refuse to cut scripts because of the affect they have on BG levels and recent studies that show that are not effective..and the same results can be reached through dietary changes alone…the next bunch of quacks have recently endorsed statins for all diabetics even if they do not have high a preventive measure…

RosalieM 2015-01-23 14:14:39 -0600 Report

I was aware of that. That is one reason I refused to take statins. I have a pretty high saturated fat diet, and my cholesterol is 230-250. My ratio is 2.5 that is the crucial number. whole foods diet and exercise is what Mayo Clinic says does it.
And it does it for me.

I would be very interested in knowing if there is a connection.

It is hard to prove if a person is overweight and has metabolic syndrome as
they are also risk factors. Which came first the chicken or the egg?.

Type1Lou 2015-01-23 14:49:50 -0600 Report

On the lighter side, I saw this on Facebook: I just placed an order on e-bay for a chicken and an egg to see which would come first…
