Wicked Atkins bars....

I went into full on ditzy chick mode today…I knew I had to run some errands with my hubby..I knew I was going to be out when I was suppose to have lunch…I packed a bag of nuts and 2 little baby bell gouda circles in some plastic baggies and was all set…then I left them home…on the table…Then took off into the food wasteland that is Veterans Blvd where I live…must be 20 Fast food restaurants along the way..a couple hours in I was starving…so I tell my hubby to pull into the parking lot of a convenience store..surely there was SOMETHING I could eat in there…it turned out the pickings were slim…BUT they did have atkins bars…okay I don't usually eat them..but I am hungry and well I really don't have much of a choice…before I ate I was at 97…one hour later…154…then at 2 hours 179…yep one "harmless" atkins bar…I am glad it tasted awesome..(the peanut butter bar)..because if it had sucked AND spiked me like that..I would of been one pissed off chicky…my hubby just went to the store, God love him…and bought 6 boxes of the single serve nuts..and about a dozen atkins vanilla shakes…to keep in the car from now on…yep…he is a special guy.

I do the glucerna shakes and they help during the day and keeps sugar down. I was during the bar meal but found that wasn't good for me

Not sure if it is available everywhere, but I just tried Premier Protein drink. They are low fat 1 g of sugar, and about 30G of protein. 160 calories. taste is not bad either. They have them at Walgreen's, Walmart & Sam's Club as well as online. My mom-in-law goes to a bariatric center (she did not have surgery just goes for weight loss) and they told her to try them, as that is what many of the bariatric patients drink. I got some to keep on hand for my Mom (she does not like to eat much) and to keep one handy in case.

The first shakes I tried after being diagnosed were the glucerna…my bg levels reacted horribly to them…waaay to many carbs..and look at the ingredient list…disgusting…then I switched to the Boost glucose control…less than half the carbs and they didn't make me spike…when I went low carb I switch to the Atkins shakes…those things are amazing..My bg levels actually go down two hours after I have one…if I am at 100 before I drink one…two hours later I will be in the 90's..

Remember Atikns producrs are made with weight loss in mind, not diabetics.

Atkins bars are marketed as being ultra low carb…people need to be low carb for different reasons…many diabetics are low carb..and many non diabetics are low carb…Dr. Atkins, if you read his original book, acknowledged that his diet caused significant weight loss…a matter of fact he developed the diet so he could battle his own weight issue…but the vast majority of the book stressed that it was about health and NOT weight…how his diet controlled glucose levels and lowered cholesterol…

Jibber,
I have been wanting to invent my own high protein/low carb energy bar. What is holding me back is what is used to hold it together that is low carb. I can use nuts and dried egg powder, and Hi maize 260, all low carb, but how to get it to stick together is the problem I haven't solved yet. What Atkins used to stick the protein together may be what has raised your blood sugar. Any clues to that would be greatly appreciated.

Just a note about the Atkins bars. As I'm sure you read my reply to James the bars don't raise my BG as it does yours. Maybe it's just the difference in our make up. I don't find the bars wicked. They have become a part of my diet. I still loose 10 to 12 lbs. a month the same as you do. I just count them in my daily carb intake. Sorry I have to disagree with you. But that's the point, we all different opinions. Your husband is a good man to support you in such a way
as he did. Just like James stood up for me. We both have good men.
You know it suddenly occurred to me, you could have had a liver dump
When you were so hungry. Then you ate the bar a d the combination
of the 2 caused your BG to sore. Just a thought. VL

Valentine lady, would you mind listing the ingredients on the Atkins bar?
I have been wanting to make a bar that doesn't raise blood sugar. I can't think of a product that would be low enough in carbs to make it out of.
I would like to know what Atkins uses. Thanks

I doubt it…I was in the 90's when I ate…and a few hours before I was at 112…I am a testing fiend…for just THIS reason…and I usually go 5 hours in between meal…with a small snack thrown in a couple times during the day…I find that this timing..keeps my glucose levels very steady 95% of the time…between 90 and 125…130 at the most…I figured this one out recently because I am a testing fiend…I am still very new to this diabetes thing..some people think I test too much..but to me this is a learning experience..and everytime I test, I test for a reason…I am still working on sorting through certain foods to see how they affect me…so that is how I know I didn't have a dump…this AND the other atkins products also make me spike,their chocolates and their snack bars do horrible things to my BG..

I'm so sorry many of.Atkins products spike you. I suppose I'm just lucky. You said people think you test to often? You need to do what makes you comfortable. You stay on the path your on you seem to be doing just fine. You have to admit Atkins is a good weight loss plan. It just appears
not all the products are for everyone. The only product I use is the bars. 1 or 2 at most a day. Keeps me from hypoglycemic hell. That's what is important to me. To our weight loss..VL

My fiancee` Valentine lady uses Atkins bars to lose weight and control her BG levels. So because I was flying there over the Christmas holidays I asked her if I could bring some with me when I came. I found the display in Walmart finally and I called her for her preferences.

What I did not know at that time was those bars come in 3 levels of carb intensity, "treat" "snack" and "meal". The meal, of course, has the most carbs.
Perhaps what you got from the store was a "meal" bar VL asked me to get either a "treat" or a "snack" bar. She has good success at keeping her BG down with those bars.

I'll be returning there for her birthday which is Valentine's day (hence her screen name). As she cannot get out much this winter (which has been unusualy cold, wet and icy), I must supply her with things like that long distance. (I am in Las Vegas, Nv, she in Lubbock Tx).

So she'd dispute that those bars are "wicked"

Thank you for telling jibjab about my Atkins bars. It's true about the meal bar. You did bring one to me that is designed
for breakfast. I do occasionally have one in the afternoons. It
is the only one that spikes me. But, I only spike to 120 to125 or so. The bars do right by me.. James is 100% right. Especially at night before bed.

It was a meal bar..I bought the meal bar rather than the snack or treats because I already knew THOSE spiked me…I kind of already knew this would do the same…but I was really backed into a corner and STARVING…but I wasn't expecting to go up as high as I did…live and learn…funny because when I have the atkins shakes mixed with almond milk in the morning…my BG levels go down from my fasting number two hours post meal…sooooo…and I even add nuts or berries to them sometimes..

I can relate to this. You sound just like me on a road trip we took last year. It was miserable because most restaurants and fast food places and convenience stores didn't have much on the menu that I could eat. This really stressed me out, which didn't do a thing for my glucose. It ran high for the entire trip. So…on our most recent road trip I went extra prepared. We packed an ice chest and box of foods and drinks that were healthy for both of us. That trip went so much better. The only meal that we ate at restaurants was breakfast. I love a good veggie omlet! I learn slowly at times but I do eventually learn the lesson. I don't go anywhere without a healthy snack (or two) in my purse and/or car whenever I go out now. I find this to be especially important when flying. Good luck finding anything reasonable at most airports.

Wow, that's a bummer leaving your snacks at home but we've all done that :-) The best thing is to learn from it which it sounds like you did since you will now have snacks in the car.
