I forgot to ask my endo this question on Friday when I saw him for the first time…(ac1 results coming tomorrow)…but before I was diagnosed I gave myself a sugar and honey facial/mask for an hour every other kept my skin amazingly soft and wrinkle free..not even fine lines!!!!…After I was diagnosed I stopped this practice because I know the skin is very porous and I don't know if sugar can be absorbed into the body this way, and if it is does it harm a diabetic to do so…As I said this may be the dumbess question ever in the history of DC…but until I find an answer my skin shall suffer…lmao

sorry to rain on everybody's fun time with skin, but I believe EVERY thing can be absorbed through the skin. If you do the honey mask, do it, and take it off on time, to be sure. And, Jibber, it is NOT a dumb question. There are NO dumb questions.

Howdy Jib Jab

IMHO the only dumb, stupid or foolish question in a HONEST question which is NOT asked. Since i believe that your question is a honest one, it is not a dumb question!

I asked Google if sugar can be absorbed through the skin and the best answer I could locate says "no" You may view that answer here ~

I think it safe to say that you may resume the practice and enjoy smooth skin again.

God's best to you

I have to admit that when I first read your question I thought it might have been the dumbest question I had seen and gave me a good chuckle … but then it got me thinking … they are working on transdermal insulin delivery and even transdermal glucose monitoring … and any number of drugs are currently being delivered through the skin … so why not?
Well, apparently it's not as east as just smearing something on your skin and it passes into the blood stream. I did a bit of research and as I am not sure I completely understand it so I'll just say …highly unlikely that sugar and or honey applied to your skin for 1 hour is able to enter your blood system.
So … my apologies … not a dumb question at all.

no need to apologize…I was thinking it was a dumb question when I asked it…but like you I started thinking..and felt it might be possible…I even considered calling my ex in NYC to ask him…he is a PhD level bio-chemist…then I decided against it…I claim temporary insanity for even thinking about it now…hee hee

I know our skin does absorb a lot of things, but I am not sure that our face does so much. I would be curious to find out. I guess testing after getting one would help, but figuring out when it happens between a meal might be tricky.

so when do you suggest, if you do have a suggestion, should I do it..

How often do you test and eat during the day? I try to eat just 3 meals now. The snacking was making me crazy. It's easier for me to just keep my 3. So I also have more time between that I can experiment with other things like this.

So after your two hour post meal test give your facial a try and then test before you eat your next meal. See what happens. I never base my decisions on just one event, so maybe try it for a week or two and see if you find a pattern. If it's not bothering your numbers and you can keep from licking your fingers, you'll have your answer.

I have since found out that it wont raise me levels…BUT , I am a nervous nelly when it comes to BG so I will test anyway..hee hee…yeah me too I eat on a set schedule everyday 3 meals..5 hours apart..only been doing this a few days..BUT..being on a LCHF diet really makes me stay fuller longer and I find that if I wait the 5 hours my BG falls back to about 100 and it stays in the 120's after eating…don't tell my mother I am playing with my food…(My new favorite saying since I started all my experiments)

With out any doubts it will not raise your blood sugar. I am not a doctor but my 36 years Diabetic life experience tells me you'll be fine. But watch out for those "healthy" snacks.

I have no idea, but I believe all I have to do is think about sugar and my BG goes up. If I rubbed it on my face I would be afraid my BG would take off like a rocket. LOL Let us know how your experiment turns out.

isn't it true…It is Carnival season down here and there are king cakes EVERYWHERE!!…I swear I told my son the other day that I felt like just being in the room with a king cake made my BG level rise…lmao

No time today…but I will try it tomorrow…half way in between lunch and as to not to interfere with meal BG too much…and I will not lick my lips..lmao…it doesn't go on my lips anyway…I scrub it on to exfoliate then I leave it for an hour…wonderful..

I don't know, however put the stuff on your face and test you blood sugar, before you put it on and after you take it off. You will have the answer. Put it on 2 hours after you have eaten and do not exercise until after you have taken it off.
You might repeat this test at least three times. That way any variables will be eliminated. Do not lick you lips!

I do not think it a dumb question at all. I would like to know too!! when you find out, please let us know. that sounds like something I would like to do too.

I don't think it's a dumb question at all. Our skin absorbs much. I would be curious to learn the answer. If it is safe for diabetics I think I would like to try your "potion" on my face. I suddenly discovered a lot more wrinkles after much weight loss and anything I can do to firm it up and smooth it out would be a good thing, LOL.

Type1Lou 2015-01-18 15:34:06 -0600 Report

I don't think it's dumb at all. I don't know the answer but my guess would be that it would do no harm as long as you don't ingest any of the sugar. Why not just try one and see what your BG's are afterwards (making sure that you clean your test site to remove any trace of the sugar that might be on your hands.) I'll be interested in hearing what other (more knowledgeable people than I ) have to say about this.
