OK, it's cold outside, I'm cold and I just want to curl up in my chair and eat. Time to break out the crochet hook. And maybe a heating pad . My feet are like ice cubes. What do you do for the munchies?

Nuts and popcorn works for me. I buy the nuts raw and air pop the popcorn so I can cut down on the fat. It also allows me to control the amount of salt, which is a constant battle for me. Sometimes I flavor the popcorn with various herbs and spices just for something different.

Whatever we want… long as we pay for it.

I'm a fan of pretzel sticks, a lot of food for in one serving there. Cucumbers work nicely too.

Sometimes I get the craving for pretzels too, but try to have only half the rccommended serving. And eat them slowly so they last a long time.

at about 25 grams of carbs per oz. pretzels seem a bit too high for me
cukes on the other hand … now you're talking! (about 1 gram per oz)

My hubby says to me "whenever you feel like it, I sure would like some blueberry muffins". LOL… I suppose after 56hrs work this week, he probably deserves them. Gotta love him and his little hints.

I am so lucky…after years of cutting fabric for a living and crocheting, I never developed carpal tunnel or arthritis in my hands. My shoulders yes, but it very seldom bothers me. My sisters both have knee problems. My oldest sister has had both replaced and I think my other sister mentioned she needed one of hers replaced also. Of course neither one has diabetes sooooo

Do you buy you nuts already mixed, or make your own mix. I found that I like them unsalted much better and usually grab the mixed bag of the shelf at the grocery or Walgreens. Although I do like cashews.

I buy them separate..I haven't been able to find a single bag of mixed nuts that only had one ingredient..NUTS…they all add something…doesn't mean they are not out there…just means I haven't found them yet..

I like the mix from Walgreens best…just nuts and the price is ok. The grocery store and Walmart mostly have other stuff mixed in and I will buy them too, just have to pay attention to the carbs when I eat them. Still better for me than eating a handful of cookies or slice of pie. Although I think they use raisins and cranberries as a filler so they can cheat on the nuts.

I have a freind who is a left-handed crocheter…she always calls me when she runs into a problem with a pattern. Boy have we had some times trying to straighten her out, me being a righty. Actually, now there's all kinds of videos and instructions for leftys if you really want to learn. It is my best threrapy.

You and your friend sit in front of a mirror and the lefty friend will think she is looking at a left hander. Of course she needs to be looking into the mirror at what you are doing.

So the general consensus is we're all a bunch of nuts, cause that's what I had. P nut butter and Apple may be lunch tomorrow, and some carrot sticks. I'm craving carrot sticks.

I tell all the people I meet that I am a nut…BUT I am a very high quality nut…I am a organic non-GMO macadamia nut…not a low grade peanut like the rest of the nuts out there..

I wish I knew how to crotchet, it is one of those things I've tried many times over the years and just never got the hang of, maybe I should try again, it's good to have something to keep your hands busy. When I get the munchies, which isn't all that often, I usually try to get something to drink first, and if that doesn't work, I grab a handful of nuts and seeds. I keep a ziploc bag of mixed nuts and seeds so all I have to do is reach in and grab a handful or two and that usually satisfies. HUGS, Heidi

I so want to learn how to knit…But I am all thumbs..I watch the knitting videos online and I get stressed trying to follow along…I need to find a local class with an instructor that can actually be with me..NOT that easy to do…I could kick myself for not taking advantage of the free knitting classes they offered last year at my college..

I couldn't learn to crochet from my mother because I am left handed. We would have had to sit in front of a mirror otherwise everything is backward. I didn't think of sitting in front of a mirror until now.

I used to spin wool into knitting yarn, and not know how to knit, I always said knitting was for old people, but i finally learned and loved it. My fingers are just too achey these days to do it anymore :(

Hi Sue,
When I get the munchies I usually grab handful of nuts. My favorite
is an apple with peanut butter on a slice. Or cut up vegies are good too. Or SF hot cocoa, in a pinch

Nuts. I like popcorn but can't eat it without salt so I have cut way back on eating it.

I eat so frequently during the day (every 4 to 5 hours) that I don't usually feel hungry or get the munchies. But when I do get that craving it is usually for something salty or sweet. My favorite salty snack is popcorn (3 cups). If I want something sweet I make my sugar free, grain free chocolate cake in a mug. My hubby thinks it's gross and won't even taste it but it satisfies that need for something sweet and chocolate. With my sugar free hot cocoa…I'm in Heaven.

Nuts with a cup of coffee…I try to mix them up..eating different kinds because although they are all healthy each one seems to have a specific benefit the rest don't have…so one day almonds, the next pecans, the next walnuts..you get the point…

Why don't you mix your nuts together. I buy 4 two pound bags of different plain nuts from Sam's club. I mix them in a big container. Then I put the mixture in Folger coffee containers. Zip lock bags would work and take up less space. They can be stored in an extra fridge or freezer. If you don't have enough room. just do 1 lb bags. The nuts have different nutrients. With a mixture you get some of all the nutrients in the nuts every day. I do the same with fruit. I cut it up and mix many fruits together. It takes really good and have the nutrients from every food. My fruit bowl lasts bout a week.
then I make another one.

Next time I go to Sams I will have to look for them. Do they come loose or packaged? I thought I was all over Sams the last time and didn't see them. I did however, see an excellant buy on coconut flour and sugar. I love fruit salad, but thought so much fruit was off limits because of the sugar. Will definitely be making a bowl. What do you consider a serving size, 1/2 cup?

RosalieM
RosalieM 2015-01-11 16:08:12 -0600 Report

I/2 cup is about right. I don put bananas in though as they don't keep. They get mushy. Our Sam's club usually has them in a cross isle near the sugar
flour and baking stuff.

Nuts…almonds, walnuts, peanuts. They are low carb and fill me up. Also, ahot drink may help to curb that hungry feeling. I like a cup of Sleepy Time Herb tea in the evening.

Still trying to find my favorite herbal tea flavor. Sleepy Time is good though. A long time ago, Orange Zinger was my favorite, but then they changed the blend and I didn't think it was as tasty.

My very first special tea was Constant Comment. That was over 40 years ago. I remember it because I was a grad student in Boston taking a night class at Simmons College and on my drive home, I totaled my car in Boston's Back Bay after someone ran a red light and sideswiped me. A kindly couple brought me into their apartment to wait for my husband to come pick me up. Luckily, no one got hurt. They gave me a cup of Bigelow's Constant Comment to help settle me down while I was waiting. I hadn't remembered that act of kindness until you mentioned different flavors of tea.

Chicharrones aka pork rinds … doused with liberal amounts of Frank's Red Hot
zero carbs and high protein (17 grams per oz) and beyond yummy!

I never used to like pork rinds until I was a diabetic. Searching for that crunch without the carbs is hard, but these certainly have it. I have not had any in a long time, I might just have to pick some up.

Have to be in the mood for pork rinds, but I'll pass on the hot sauce. Don't think it would agree with my stoma or my tonsils. LOL I knew they were no carb, but didn't realize they were high protein.

I have the munchies, too. I've been trying to fight them off. This cold weather does not help. I just had a handful of almonds—filling, tasty, and crunchy.

Cold weather makes you hungrier but it is OK as your metabolism is higher and you use it up. My stray cats outside (in my greenhouse) are eating constantly because it is cold. If they don't they lose weight.

Howdy Sue
Perhaps you could curl up in you chair and drink something hot like coffee or SF cocoa. It fills up the tummy and keeps your hands busy so the munchies are not so munchable.

Just a thought.
James
