My 8 year old son was diagnosed type 1 last February. He is doing ok and is a very active boy. Just looking for any advice you can share, especially on how to respond when he slips up and sneaks snacks. As of now we are not freaking out on him as long as he doesn't lie about what he has eaten. Much respect to all of you on this board,

I wish I could help you, I really can't. I like Jib Jab's recommendations. My thought is for you, as a Mom, are there any support groups around for diabetes? If so, you might want to join, although they are diabetes support groups, they are usually open to family members of people with diabetes, and you can usually get great support and advice. Best to you and your son.

My 8 year old Nephew was just diagnosed type 1 a few months ago.. The best advice I can give empower him as much as nephew helps to plan his meals.maybe if you sit with him and let him help plan his meals AND SNACKS he will be motivated to follow his diet better…and he is learning how to give himself his insulin (he doesn't take it by himself yet) and he wants to know EVERYTHING about diabetes…education is a beautiful thing..and so is empowerment!!!
