I am looking into taking probiotics in an effort to lose weight. I think I have a pretty good idea of how they work and will be checking with the neurologist a pcp before I take anything, but would like to get some input from the community about it. Have already read several articles here. So my question is, do you use probiotics, if you do, what kind and what benefits do you see from using them?

This is good information. I really think it is something I need to check out, especially after I get reassembled. I will want to keep my gut as healthy as possible.

jayabee52 2015-01-07 09:15:04 -0600 Report

reassembled? are you being taken apart soon?

suecsdy 2015-01-07 09:36:59 -0600 Report

I've already been disassembled. I had to have a colostomy last year because of diverticulitis. At the end of this monyh I have an appt. with my surgeon to talk about getting it reversed. That's one of the reasons I freaked out about the kidney issue. I have since done a little more research and dicovered it is not as bad as I feared and I hope I can turn it around by drinking. I know I have not been drinking as much as when I was working. Keeping my fingers crossed. And my waster jug full.

Hi Sue
I can't see where probiotics will help you loose weight. There's only one way to help you, as I see it, is for you to help yourself. I've tried everything then got healthy and relied on me. So far it's working. A ggood low carb diet is what you need probiotics for u our health. Hugs, ZVL

OK, I actually tried 2 new foods today. Yay me! raw cauliflower and raw zuchini. I found both to be rather tasteless, but i could eat the cauliflower with a little dressing. I expected more of the zuchini, it may have been a little past its prime as it was not crisp like I expected. rather have zuchini bread.

Hi Sue,
I'm sure proud of you for trying 2 nrw vegies. I love both, but cooked. For all you naysayers out there, cooked properly is good
too Maybe not as healthy, but good anyway. I love zucchini stir-fried. Or you van brown
your favorite meat , lay into a large piece of tin foil. Add all the vegies you want, bake 375 degrees for 1 hour. Oh I forrgot you sdd olive oil or butter to vegies before closing up tin foil.. Both yoir vegies go great together in this.
Try it you might enjoy this. To good food, hugs, VL

having a healthy gut is a great thing … and yes, studies show it can improve weight loss
I have taken probiotic supplements but much prefer to get them naturally.
Did you know that dark chocolate, pickles and olives are all good sources of probiotics?
As Rose pointed out you also want to eat a diet that is high in soluble fiber … pretty sure that helped me with my weight loss.

suecsdy 2015-01-06 12:23:36 -0600 Report

Have to be careful with the fiber right now due to a different medical issue, but I do like dark chocolate. Any particular brand?

haoleboy 2015-01-06 12:51:14 -0600 Report

My personal preference (price, taste, quality) are Lindt 85% cocoa and Ghirardelli 86% … both run less than $2.50 a bar at Walmart and are not dutched … "dutching" reduces the amount of antioxidants which is another advantage of eating dark chocolate.
If you've not tried dark chocolates before you might want to start at the 70% level as the higher the cocoa percentage the more bitter the chocolate (but the cocoa is where the nutrition lies)

suecsdy 2015-01-06 13:08:58 -0600 Report

As I have gotten older I prefer the dark choclate and lindt is the best in my book. So rich that you don't need a lot to satisfy.

haoleboy 2015-01-06 13:20:56 -0600 Report

I always worry when I recommend dark chocolate as many people think of Hershey's "Special Dark" as dark chocolate … they'd be in for quite a surprise if they tried 70% or higher chocolate.

I never really ate chocolate before, but after my stroke my doctor suggested it might be beneficial to increase my antioxidant consumption so …

I find that 1 or 2 squares of the 3,5 oz. bar to be quite satisfying … particularly with a cup of coffee.

Hi Sue,
If you do not eat meat that has been fed antibiotics, or processed foods and the chemicals they contain you will have all the good bacteria you need naturally. It is good to feed them though. They are like rabbits the more you feed them the more they multiply. They like to be fed foods that contain resistant starch fiber. That would be dry beans and other foods that have soluble fiber. If you take an antibiotic for an infection, it is a good idea to take a probiotic with it as the antibiotic will kill good bacteria.
A probiotic is just a pill containing bacteria that occur naturally in our body They are important for the immune system and digestion. I don't expect taking a probiotic will help you lose weight though.

Although I do not take a Probiotic supplement, every morning I do eat plain greek yogurt which is a probiotic food. My mother, who lived til nearly 98 also regularly ate yogurt. Probiotics have been credited with improved health and longevity. I'm a believer.

GabbyPA 2015-01-06 09:31:03 -0600 Report

They keep your gut working well and I have heard that a healthy gut helps you loose weight better. If your doctors give you the okay, you may also want to talk to the pharmacist to see which brand they recommend.

I don't know about the pill version. I have never done that. But I have used it in yogurts and fermented foods. Those are the more natural ones, but the pills were recommended to my husband last year after his lengthy stay in the hospital when he was on a lot of antibiotics. It's the only way he really gets them added back, as he's not into probiotic foods much.

My kindle is trying to speak for me today and will not recognize the words I am typing. I am trying to get opinions on PROBIOTICS.

GabbyPA 2015-01-06 09:27:12 -0600 Report

Would you like me to correct that for you?

suecsdy 2015-01-06 09:43:23 -0600 Report

Yes , please.

GabbyPA 2015-01-06 09:59:48 -0600 Report

Done. I had to laugh when I read it. Self correct is not always what it's cracked up to be. LOL

jayabee52 2015-01-06 16:27:22 -0600 Report

actually Gabby, there is a occurance of the anti/probiotic in the last sentence of Sue's original post. You might want to wave your "magic wand" over that last sentence.

suecsdy 2015-01-06 10:02:49 -0600 Report

I know. Now I,m on my pc,so at least it says what I type. Thanks. How did you fix it? I didn't see a edit button for the original post.
