Take twelve whole months,
Clean them thoroughly of all bitterness, hate, and jealousy,
make them just as fresh and clean as possible.
Now cut each month into twenty-eight, thirty, or
thirty-one different parts, but don't make up
the whole batch at once.
Prepare it one day at a time out of these ingredients.
Mix well into each day one part of faith,
one part of patience, one part of courage,
and one part of work.
Add to each day one part of hope,
faithfulness, generosity, and kindness.
Blend with one part prayer, one part meditation,
and one good deed.
Season the whole with a dash of good spirits,
a sprinkle of fun, a pinch of play,
and a cupful of good humor.
Pour all of this into a vessel of love.
Cook thoroughly over radiant joy,
garnish with a smile, and serve with quietness,
unselfishness, and cheerfulness.
You're bound to have a happy new year.

RebDee, this is really great. Thanks a lot for posting it. There's a whole lot to be said for taking life one day at a time, and maintaining an attitude of kindness and compassion. Words to live by!

Are you a Deena? My daughter is too and spelled the same. How so you make the sweet potato chips? I haven't used mine which are really yams. I don't like real Swt potatoes and they are more expensive…go figure.

Yes, I am a real Deena. Glad to have someone else who spells it the same way. I don't make sweet potato chips, I buy them. They are TERRA real vegetable chips with no salt added and non GMO. I do make sweet potatoes or yams in the microwave for myself. I honestly can't tell the difference so whichever is cheaper, that is what I buy. I don't eat white potatoes.

The reason that I am RebDee is because my husband was a rabbi and therefore I am a rebbetzin, even though he died 5 years ago. Until I marry again I will always have that title.

Well, it is now Thursday, January 1, 2015. I went out to dinner (brought home more than half) then went with friends to a party of women where we each brought something to nibble on. I was so full from dinner that the nibbles did not effect me until almost the end of the party when I had a couple of sweet potato chips (because I wanted to taste them since I had brought them but never had bought them before) and one brownie bit (the equivalent of one bite). Each time an advertisement came on the tv, I got up from my chair and walked around. We all had a great time. So the year started off nicely.

May I respectfully ask you why you named yourself "handmashed." It gives me a picture of your hand mashed by some kind of machine. Is that right? OY And thanks for liking my poem.

I noticed that you asked about Bariatric surgery awhile ago. What exactly is it? I'm not getting good BG control on just Metformin…2000 mgs a day. True I was a bad girl yesterday at a H.S, basketball game having a hot dog, chips and donut. Dinner. Also went to an indoor soccer game. Wish all their activity transferred to me. One of my grandson's playing is type 1 and he played strong but didn't feel well so I 'm not sure what he did after blood test…eat? Insulin? Because he was off to work. His type 1 started at 17 after menengitis. He's 26 today. I don't know why I got type 2. Not grossly overweight and normally try to keep carbs under control except for my addiction to popcorn at night. Fingers are numb so must quit typing on IPAD. I take Nuerontin to help. Also have pain in left toe by the nail. Not getting answers in Ask Expert. Bye for now…M.A.

My particular bariatric surgery is called the Sleeve. If you look at a D what the surgeon does is take off the rounded side so that it ends up looking like II It takes out the grelin (bad stuff that makes you want to eat) from your stomach and since your tummy is now so much smaller, you fill up faster and feel fuller at just half a meal. I am so happy that I had the surgery. And before the surgery, I had 12 weeks of pre-bariatric surgery classes plus other classes to supplement in nutrition and stress. Now I go to post-bariatric surgery meetings with others who have had one of the three types of bariatric surgery. I have met new friends with the same surgeries and they told me what works for them and what does not so I was ready ahead of time. I even saw friends that I had not seen in years who have had the surgery and they looked fantastic and I didn't even recognize them at first. Not one person whom I have met, and who has had either sleeve or Ruen Y surgery (more radical) has regretted it. But I no longer can have soda because of the bubbles, no popcorn, and some foods that I loved before surgery, now makes me feel nauseated. Small price to pay for what I am beginning to look like - a hot sexy mama (lol)!!!

Oh, I get it…it's for weight loss, not diabetes…tho it helps with that too, right? Thanks for the info.

At 5'4", 209 lbs, I was considered morbidly obese and my diabetes was out of control. Now I am 45 lbs less, in perfect control of my Diabetes, and doing more exercises than I ever did before, eating less but enjoying the taste more. And no more meds or insulin. Hurray for me!!! Still have 35 lbs to go to reach goal weight.
