How do you calculate sugar alcohols when counting carbs? One book I read said to subtract half, another said subtract the total?

I do carb - fiber. That's what my endo recommended. Sugars to me is somewhat of an indicator as to how fast the sugar spike will hit…so if the sugar is higher (more than 50% of the total carb) I dose insulin (Humalog) a little bit further ahead (maybe 10 minutes) of eating. It seems to work ok for me :).

I'm with Lou on the whole marketing ploy idea
considering the seriousness of this I will err on the side of caution and ALWAYS count total carbs… the whole net carbs thing has always baffled me, have you ever noticed they can't seem to agree on when or how you should calculate those net carbs?
no thanks

I just count the total carbs of everything that I eat. The "NET CARB" promotion by manufacturers is a marketing ploy, IMO. Sugar alcohols are absorbed into the blood stream more slowly but they are still there. By limiting myself to 120 grams of total carb per day, I am able to maintain good control of my diabetes and keep my weight in the low 120's.

That is a game I tend to stay away from. However, I also do not take insulin according to my carb count. If you just used the carb count and applied that, see how you react. If you get too low, you know you can subtract some of them. But I will take some practice to find that right formula.

I just count the total carbs. It is the easiest way for me. Also, if it saves me a few carbs during the day, so much the better.

I don't count sugar alcohol at all, or fiber, i only count the total carbs. Best of health in 2015. hugs, heidi

The thinking of most is you subtract half…some will say all, but I always go with caution with things like that…better to be safe..

I have heard half. I don't subtract any i have to consider them all as my total count. Same with fiber
