What Do You Want to Accomplish in 2015?

There are many schools of thought on New Year's goals, resolutions and promising to do the right things. All can be broken, but they can also be adjusted and realigned. I think when we put so much pressure on ourselves to do it perfect every day, if we fall down, we never give ourselves permission to get back up and try again.

Example, our goal this year was to buy the house we were renting. We worked hard at every turn and seemed to hit road blocks all along the way. It was frustrating, exhausting and there were lots of tears. Finally, it came to be through a lot of creative thinking and great landlords. We did it. It didn't go as planned, but it got accomplished.

The same goes for our daily, weekly, monthly and yearly goals. We don't always get there when we wanted or how we planned, but if we keep them in mind, we can get there or we can adjust our plan and try something different.

The key is to have something to work for. We work for a pay check, we save for a vacation, we train for a marathon and we study for a test. The reward is there and it pulls us along.

What is one of the things that you really want to accomplish in 2015? How do you plan to do it? What is your reward for accomplishing it?

I'm looking to start taking a supplement myself and would like to hear what people here have tried. My A1c has been 6.3%, but I constantly feel drained. I'm trying to stick to my New Year's resolution to workout 3x a week, but feel so spent. Gabby, I like your idea of keeping a journal. I've tried it before and it helps. StephD143, what supplement are you taking? Congrats to all who sticking to their resolutions, keep it up!

GabbyPA 2015-02-09 08:28:18 -0600 Report

I take Fish Oil for my heart, turmeric for my joints, Moringa for my energy, and Fenugreek for my glucose. I don't take vitamins persae, and I have changed what I take over the years trying to find things that work for me. I need to add back Alpha Lipoic Acid for my neuropathy. But that is what I take now and have been for about 6 months. I think I have settled.

Hi Gabby, thanks for the advice on the meals and supplements. I've begun using MyFitness Pal to help me track what I eat and I have been astonished that the main culprit in going over my carb intake when I eat out is the sauce or ketchup. They just sneak up on you. But not anymore. I checked out the DASH diet and Paleo diet on the Diet plan tab in the Treatment section and decided to try the Paleo diet to see how long I can stand it. I'll write a review in about three weeks in the section. In regards to the supplements, I read up on them but it seems like a lot of pills to take along with everything else I take. I looked at Cinnalife that another member suggested and it had the lipoic acid that you mentioned. It says it was developed by a diabetic pharmacist. I've tried Airborne, I felt it worked for me and it was developed by a schoolteacher so I'll try something made by a fellow diabetes fighter. Thanks for the advice and this website has been a great resource for a diabetes beginner like me.

I love eating along the paleo line. I do eat dairy, but grains are all but gone and I like meat, so paleo type is very good for me.

I am glad the site is proving to be helpful.

I am approaching the "habit" time of my new goals. When you do something for 3 weeks it can become a habit. So I have been faithful to my journal, carb counting, exercise and meal plans and it is paying off. I am very happy.

RogerF73 2015-02-07 18:57:46 -0600 Report

Hi Gabby, since I read this forum, I started to work on my journal more often. In regards to the meal plans, are you trying any specific diet or meal plan? Congrats and keep up the good work!

GabbyPA 2015-02-09 08:24:47 -0600 Report

I am just keeping my goal of 80 or less carbs per day, trying to keep my calories between 1200-1500 a day and making sure I am exercising every day. I still have to take all my meds and am not trying to adjust any of that until I am in my goal area for my glucose numbers.

I have to get better about choices in eating out though. Those blow my day every time, even when I choose things like broccoli and salads. Restaurant foods are just way higher in everything than when I cook at home. The other day I had a porkchop, green beans and spaghetti squash with nothing on it and the calories were almost 1000 and the carbs were 58! OMG....dang bourbon sauce. LOL

I'm proud to say my last reading on my A1C was 5.9!!!! I'm very proud of that. Haven't borken the 6's in quite some time. Started with a new diet regimen and a new daily supplement. Hope to keep this up. Nana's workin hard!!!! OH and best of all I lost 6 lbs :)

RogerF73 2015-02-07 18:59:34 -0600 Report

HI Steph, what type of diet and supplement have you tried? Congrats on losing the pounds!

StephD143 2015-02-08 12:56:32 -0600 Report

Hi Roger. I'm taking one called CinnaLife. I've been on it for a few months and have had great results. Besides the obvious drop in sugar I mentioned before one of the main things I love is the energy it gives me. I was always soooo tired and the other supplements I tried never changed that. But cinnalife has really made an impactful difference on my sugar levels as well as my overall energy. My cholesterol has also gone down and I lost weight as well. I used promo code cinna2015 and saved 20% off my last purchase, but i'm not sure if it is expired or not. I have also been more vigilant on my carbohydrate consumption especially at dinner time since I don't want my sugar to be high while I sleep. Good luck!

Mine has been on a roller coaster ride since Dec. 03, 2010 when I first ran out of Lantus and Humalog after reading where Insulin keeps the weight on and helps you to gain a lot of weight, I stopped taking both. When my oldest Child took me to Disney World with her that Christmas I sweated off almost 10 pounds that week we were there. I told my Dr on Feb. 14th of 2011 I was not going back on unless I couldn't lose the weight I needed to get rid of. He kept pushing for me to go back on so I changed Drs. in May of 2011 after I interviewed the Dr. He asked for my Lab work and I told him to hold on this is an interview first. He laughed and said ok tell me what you think I need to know then lets see where we go from here.
I told him everything that had bugged me for the past 10 years and before I left there we had 3 other appointments set up and when I went back a week later we set up an attack plan with out insulin. I have only been back on insulin since my 58th Birthday because of the ups and downs I have been having. I went from an A1c of 13.5 down to an 11 last Month. they uped my Insulin to 45 at bed and still on the Victoza of 1.8 any time I want to take it during the day. I think this next week I am going to try it when I get up with one of my Metformin's and see how my BG goes during the day. I am back on to checking it out 3-4x a day. it got a little warmer today it was above 0 so Chloe and I went for a walk tonight, it might only have been around our section of the Block 1/4 it down the alley to the cross alley to 218 right on it to the corner of Water then back up to the house, feet were cold just that short distance but I felt wonderful for even that short of a walk. Can't wait to warm up more for longer walks with my puppy she will be a year old on Valentines Day. She really is my Valentine then from my oldest Child and her children. The weight will start dropping again real soon.

Well we wanted to be on our own Lot by July 2013 Finally moved Trailer on May 30,2014, Now for 2015 We want a Garage and the yard fenced in. I am working on getting the posts, rails and fencing for the Fenced in Yard first. Then moving any extra cash over to the Special Shares Account to work toward that Garage. I know now I can't put it in Bill's account as it don't stay there always has some reason to get it out. I use a pass book to keep track of the amount I have in my Garage Fund and I have those words on the Front of it so I know I won't get into it. I also want a better BG level and lower A1c this year. One way or another I will get there even if only 1 number lower for the A1c but hopefully I get down 3-5 numbers lower.

I kept my folding 6 ft table inside and am using it in the middle of the Front Room made a total of quilts so far that way. I am now starting on my second Log Cabin Quilt and then when that one is sent out I will be starting on the 3rd one that is for sell. I am only charging $400 for King size and $300 for the Queens. Cribs are for $150-$200 depending on the Patterns used and same way for the Twin and Full size Quilts. The Queens and Kings can go up $100 also depending on the Patterns used.

Take a evening walk around the Neighbor Hood together short ones at first and add a little more distance as you go along. See the changes in your Neighbor Hood and see if there are any changes you want to do to your Home and Yard from what you see around you. Your wife might surprise you with a lot of suggestions and love the time you spend with her out side walking then offer to help her do the dishes when you get back.

The New Year is fast approaching. Hoping 2015 is a good year for everyone!. I have chronic pancreatitis which landed me in 3 hospitals in 3 weeks in 2014, so you should already know that I'm looking forward to a New, Healthy Year! I had a pseudo cyst that was covering over 90% of my pancreas, which the Doc put a stint in to drain it. It was successful, but they tell me my pancreas is "trashed" (love their choice of words) it doesn't do what it's suppose to do as far as insulin goes. BUT… I've been on the way UP for several months…still trying to manage my diabetes and blood sugar levels. I am active…I work a 40 hour week in retail! My Doc has set me up with a diabetic pump. I have been taking the on-line classes (it's very involved) and I'm currently waiting for an appointment to get "hooked up"…they tell me I will have freedom and that I WILL be able to remember everything I need to know about taking care of the pump and all that goes with it. I deal with pain nearly 24/7 from other issues and I try to keep this old creeky body in motion! Thanks for listening! Happy New Year to Everyone. May You Have ENOUGH Today and Every Day! and my motto "Keep Puttin One Foot In Front Of The Other" ALWAYS

All I have to do is walk upto the post office then to the party store turn left to Market St. Left and down 218 for just 1 block back to my Street and upto the house is 1 mile so we walk there most days weather permiting my dog Chloe and me. We were walking one day I was feeling real good and over did it had walked up to State Rd 800 left to the walk trail and back don't know how far that was but was in pain the rest of day if not for Chloe I don't think I would have made it back to the house. I do not make "resolutions", but I do set goals (i think there is a definite difference between the two). In 2014 I had a few goals I didn't meet, I will follow up on those, and try to hit those. For 2015, I plan to continue my healthy eating plan and continue with healthy BG and A1c's and weight loss. I am adding exercise to help with those things as well. I plan to start a diabetes support group locally. I will be meeting with a CDE to get some help on that. I want to continue my work in hospice volunteering. I hope to take some computer classes this Winter and Spring and by Fall have a part time job. I have some smaller goals, like read the book Sense and Sensibility, and a few other classics (in book form, not on kindle) and go to the ocean at least 3 times and little things like that. I think setting goals is great, but they can be set anytime during the year, not just at the start of the new year, and need to be reevaluated several times during the year.
My prayer is that all have a happy healthy sucessful 2015. HUGS, Heidi

I do not believe in New Year's resolutions. I make changes throughout the year based on seasonal changes. I have already put into place things I want to accomplish by Spring. I am now looking at things I want to accomplish during the Summer.

I along with my colleague hope to have our Community Awareness Police pilot program up and running within the next 3 weeks. If the program is successful and it will be, it will become a program for all officers and a part of the Police Academy. The goal is a more community oriented police force.

The other goal is to throw out or donate every article of clothing I have that does not fit. I plan to have this completed by the end of February as well as strip years of wall paper off my bedroom walls and paint them. No easy task since my bedroom is larger than the average 9x12 room with 12 ft ceilings and strip the wooden mantle down to clean wood to find out what kind of wood it is. I think it is oak.

Then I start implementing what I hope to accomplish during Spring.

Every time I run out of Victoza the weight loss stops and then when I start it again the weight loss starts up again with a great amount the first 2 weeks again then back to steady with about 2-5 pounds a month. I loss a lot more when I can get out and walk. My oldest Daughter Ann and her 2 youngest gave me a Beagle mixture for Mother's Day she is a great walking companion and keeps me moving a lot more than before.
