My mom was on home care and I called in a dietician. First of all I did not know the 1800 calorie diet is pure bullshit! Next I did not know that Dieticians don't use the Glycemic index anymore. Finally I did not know plant protein was so harmful for you, especially in regards to overloading your kidneys. Also a CKD pre-dialysis diet is pretty piss poor. Have to watch the excess phosphorous and potassium which is in everything almost. Also I learned Metformin is not good for the kidneys. I am so afraid of kidney failure now. I think James has the right idea about trying to get off meds long term in order to control our HBA1c. Carbs and sugars are good, but dialysis sucks!

I'm glad you had the opportunity to work with a dietitian to help you understand the individualized diet your mom needs for CKD pre-dialysis. The American Diabetes Association notes that plant protein overall is a healthy option, but people with CKD have specialized needs. ~Lynn @Glucerna

I agree the goal should always, whenever possible,, to get off your meds…I did get a little confused reading your post though…plant based protein is harmful???…I know too much of anything is no good…but how much plant protein is no good???..I also would like to know about metformin being bad for your kidneys..it is my understanding that the reason Metofrmin is the go to med of choice is that it has no serious side effects??..as for Calories…why would you say a diet of any particular number of calories is pure bullshit…aren't calorie requirements based on gender and activity levels..

That is a definite "pro and con" part of the list.
Can you expound on why the 1800 calorie diet is bad?
How much plant protein is too much or bad?
If a planned pre-dialisis diet is not good, what did they recommend?
