The best present is my health. Due to the diagnosis of diabetes, I got off the couch and started taking care of myself. I feel great as I am able to do more things which makes me feel even better.

I had a new A1C a few days before Christmas and it is now 5.4 which is great. I'm still working out daily, riding my bike when I am able to (due to the weather) and walking. I haven't lost weight for a bit but I'm okay as I am losing inches. Best of all, I have been able to lower my cholesterol from 203 to 171.

Six months ago my cholesterol was 182 and my doctor wanted me to go on a medication because the diabetes medications that I was on will often increase your cholesterol. I can't see any reason to go on a medication until it is needed. Of course when it did go up three months ago, my doctor wanted me to go on a cholesterol medication. I told her I would think about it between then and my next lab. I don't know why she was surprised that it went down. I was determined not to go on any more meds so I just started making better food choices.

Now, I am on track to decrease my insulin again on New Year's Eve!!!

P.S. I have a new treadmill (new to me, it was my mom's) and will be able to walk at home even more. Hooray!!!

the treadmill was how I got started back exercising in 2008. I love it!! I love the different settings, and that was my main form of exercise for about three yrs.

with a total cholesterol number of 182, I don't see why you would need medication. I was not on meds. when mine was close to 200 and I got it down with losing weight and continuing daily exercise and I got it down to 170—something not sure of exact number, that was years ago, and no meds. were recommended. glad you are doing well. My LDL, HDL and Trigs. all improved a good bit. keep up the good work!! I too was determined not to go on meds!

Congratulations! What a great accomplishment. These are my goals for the coming year; to KEEP my cholesterol down (it tends to fluctuate), get my A1c below 5.7 and (hopefully) be off Metformin sometime during 2015. I don't know if I can accomplish this but seeing what YOU have done has encouraged me a lot!
