Whenever you feel the need for a cigarette, take ten deep breaths. Usually the urge will go away.Good luck!!

I am sorry to say but Ty and I both started again though not nearly as much. *sigh* I was having suicidal thoughts and some other side effects from that medication and Ty has some side effects called a pharmacist about it, was told of his risk cuz of heart problems and his symptoms so he threw his away. I am sorry ya all that I could not make it!! Love yasssssss Sheila

Have you tried the Nicoderm patches? It worked for me. Also, if you and Ty smoke in the house, make a new rule. No more smoking in the house for no one. Even if it is pouring the rain down and freezing outside, that is where you must go to have a smoke. Stick to your guns.
You both can do it. If I can after almost 30 years, then anyone can.

I have faith in you. Just KEEP TRYING! Don't give up. And don't punish yourself, if you should slip up. It may take several restarts. With each other's support and us around you, I know that one day you'll wake up and not even think about having a cigarette that day. You just need to keep busy. Idle time brings on the cravings. Trust me, I know.

Don't stop trying. In the long run, you both will feel much better.

*HUGS* Judi

Hey Shelia,

Don't get discouraged. Breaking the habit can be hard. Cutting back is a good start. Also, it is a side effect of Chantix to have suicidal thoughts. I'm glad you stopped taking it. Just keep trying. Remember, you may stumble and even fall, but it's important to pick yourself up and try again. If having a life free from cigarettes is a goal for you, keep working at it.

Nicotine is an addiction, but you can break it with determination and support. We are here for you. You don't have to apologize to us for falling back into an old habit. Just pick yourself up and try again. When we learned to walk, we take one hesitant step after another until we finally walked to whomever or whatever it was urging us on. You can do this Ty and Shelia, just keep trying. We'll be here to catch you and support you if you should fall.

I tried to quit, started again but am now quitting again and am determined about it! I suck diabetic candies and drink a lot of ice tea that I make. I don't make sweet ice tea. Anyway, that keeps my stomach filled and helps me not want to smoke. I'm tempted every day and it's hard but I have to do this for my health and finances! Sorry, I haven't learned all the computer language yet except lol. I wish all of you the best in beating this nasty habit that is so bad for those of us with diabetes, especially bad. I'll keep reading and adding my replies to this discussion since it's something I really need. Take care.

Girl, you can do this..if my grandmother can quit,..anyone can!! She's not diabetic, but she uses the short little pretzel sticks when she gets cravings…she took the Chantrix 2 months ago, and hasn't smoked now for over a month!!! She did "mourn" a little over the loss of her friend of over 50 years…(at least thats how she felt, the cigs had always been there for her no matter what..lol). She still goes out to break with her smoker friends…does everything like normal, except takes her little bag of pretzels with her. She has motivated me to start taking cessation classes. I will keep everyone posted on that..in the meantime…keep US posted..K? I am pulling for you!

I smoked for over 20 yrs. I did the patch to quit. Sure, I gained some weight. Then, I joined Weight Watchers to lose what I had gained. Lost 3o lbs. I did each stage of the patch for onlt 2 wks each instead of what the box instructed. That was back in 2005. I'm still smoke-free.
Try chewing on some gum. Go for a walk.
Call a friend. Do this every time you get the urge to pick up something to put into your mouth. You may need to change some of your routines. If you stick to it, you WILL succeed.
Good Luck, Judi

I understand where you are coming from when you say you keep to yourself to stay out of trouble. You don't get annoying. Don't worry :)

It isn't very ladyllike, but my mom used a toothpick. She kept a toothpick on her to fidget with, put in her mouth and have something to keep her busy. It worked wonders. She has since kicked the toothpick habit too, no patch required! LOL

2009-06-05 19:31:10 -0500 Report

Sheila and Ty, the best thing to do is deep breathing. In through your nose and out through your mouth. It gives the same affect to your brain as dragging on a cigarette. You can also use a straw cut to the size of a cigarette to draw on and it might help when the cravings hit. Crunchy food seems to help too don't know why but pretzel sticks, carrot sticks, sugar free hard candy (but don't eat to much it will make you spend too much time in the potty lol)

lipsie 2009-06-06 00:17:14 -0500 Report

lol, didn't you just quit recently yourself? For some reason that hangs in my head. Anyhow great ideas…will do thank you VERY much! Sheila n Ty

Judimar 2009-06-05 17:43:41 -0500 Report

Hmmm perhaps celery stick or carrot to munch on when you feel the need to smoke. It will help give you that oral fixation that you maybe craving.

I don't have teeth…well I have my dentures but never use them…BUT I think I'll take this idea…I could nibble at them at least and that should help thank you! Sheila
