I have had really bad anemia for years. It is not getting any better. I eat raw spinich, watermelon, lots of cream of wheat. I just cannot take iron supplements. They make me sick. Any ideas?

Perhaps a multi-vitamin that contains iron, maybe that wouldn't be so rough on your stomache, and take it with a meal.

I have had really bad anemia for years. After undergoing a whole bunch of tests the dr put me on FoliTab 500. It is a controlled release iron with Vitamin C and Folic Acid to assist in the absorption of the iron. I have been on it for quite a while now and have not had any side effects from it.

Have you had a work up to determine why you have chronic severe anemia? If my blood sugar gets out of whack for any extended period of time I get severely anemic. This is great motivation to try harder to manage my blood sugar. To make sure that
was what was causing it though, I had multiple blood tests, a colonoscopy and endoscopy, etc., etc. I detest going through all that, but the anemia was so bad I had so few red bloods to carry oxygen I developed chest pain and shortness of breath. Iron can be toxic so I make sure it is iron deficiency anemia I have before taking iron and then I only take the iron long enough to get hemoglobin back in normal range. The short time I am on the iron it is miserable with nausea, heartburn and constipation, but I stick it out because the alternative (not being able to breathe and having chest pain) is worse. A hematologist helped figure out the cause of my anemia. Best wishes for your health and well being!
