Getting Better

So, I posted here about 2 months ago that I was diagnosed Pre-Diabetes after a full blood test and visit to the Doctor. It shook me. The Doctor gave me a list of things to eat, a list of things to avoid, and an order to exercise.

I found Diabetic Connect and that was a big help. You guys steered me in the right direction, corrected some of my mis-information, and helped me choose a good path.

It has been about 2 months since that post and I've been working hard on the changes. Went back to the Doctor and he looked at me and said "How did you DO it?"

My bad cholesterol had come down into the good zone, my good cholesterol had risen up into the good zone, by blood sugar was completely normal, and I had lost about 20 pounds. I left the office on cloud 9!

But, I know it's not over, never will be. I'm continuing to make better food choices (I can't believe that I'm eating broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus, carrots, celery, salad and LOVING it.). I'm hiking regularly and looking forward to the next Dr. appointment in 2 months. Thanks to all who offered advice!

it can be fun if you look at it as a game.. there are so many food choices out there and ways to fix them.. make it a game.. set you goal at what you know is the right number for you and then see how much food you can get into that number.. i found that i love a smoothie so i use a high pro. no or little carb drink add low carb ice cream and frozen fruit.. it fills you up and is so good.. i like the french vanilla drink. the only carbs is the fruite but that is how you play the game..

That is fantastic. Isn't it amazing what can happen when you put your mind to it. That is great. Isn't it refreshing to be excited about going to the doctor? What a feeling!

Great for YOU!!! KUDOS. As Sarguillo said about the cows dieing just so he could be fed. When I met my man, he ate so much red meat, I swore, I heard him MOO a few times. LOL Since we starting taking care of his mother(T2), he found out also, eating healthy was BETTER, and not as hard to do, as he thought!
Keep up the great job, and pat yourself on the back! You deserve it.

That's outstanding! If my experience helps someone else, I'm very happy about that. WE can DO it, it's not easy, but it's possible.

You are all right. And it's true that I should have been doing this long ago. But, we (I) tended to lie to myself. "I don't drink THAT many Dr. Peppers a day (try 5 or 6)" or "I eat fish once in awhile (red meat 2 meals a day, 5 days a week?)"
It's been a matter of being honest and really making the changes. And then finding out the changes are NOT bad. Water tastes GREAT when you've been exercising.

Bob, that is a profound observation. We all (especially men) tend to minimize our mistakes. But when we face the facts about how we're treating ourselves, it's actually much easier to make the needed changes. Then we begin to really treat ourselves and our bodies well. And it feels great!

And dont forget when we eat like bacholors. Before I was married, It was normal to stop off at the store, buy a steak and eat steak each and every night. I used to eat so much red meat, Many cows died to keep me fed. I used to not eat any veggies. A box of Hamburger helper was a full meal. And I ate the full box, with a full lbs of hamburger. Surprise. Thaty is not healthy. I learned alot in the last few years. Am still learning.

Flybob…first off way to go. Second off I am proud of you. I have been trying to get my hubby to realise this myself for about 3 months or so. If I even hint at something being healthy he gets upset and says he's not a rabbit. The only fish he will eat is a fish stick with half a bottle of tarter sause on it. Half a bottle of salad dressing for a 1/4 cup of lettuce. If I even look at the organic section in the market he gets upset.

Unfortunetly he isn't working right now, so I can't even go to the store by myself and switch packages before he gets home. He has gained 20 lbs in the last couple of months and he is getting sick quite a bit lately.

What finally made you realise that healthy doesn't have to been nasty? Besides your bs levels?

I myself am diabetic, but he doesn't think of himself as vulnerable to anything like that…his comments are always "I'm 31, not 45."

I'm just looking for little ways to incorporate some good into his diet to start with then maybe I can keep adding a little bit at a time…
