What makes my blood sugar go up after getting up & moving around?

Generally, physical activity helps to lower blood sugar levels. Exercise not only helps to burn energy (or in other words use some of the glucose that's in your body), but it also helps improve your body's response to insulin (meaning that the insulin is more effective in bringing down blood sugar levels).

Sometimes with our son, we've seen that if he's involved in a competitive sport, his blood sugar levels will actually rise during physical activity due to the adrenaline and stress response. His body releases stored sugars in his liver causing his blood sugars to rise.
