If I am experiencing High Blood sugar and it is meal time, should I bolus for the high first and wait for my blood sugar to get into normal range first before I eat and bolus again to cover the meal as usual?

Good question! Bolus Insulin can stay in your system for up to 4 hours. I would bolus for the high and for any carbs I will be eating at the same time. I might also choose to eat fewer carbs than I normally would until I get my BG back in range. You should have been given a "sliding scale" by your doctor to calculate your bolus for the high. (If you haven't, ask him/her about it) Since I use an insulin pump, I will sometimes increase my basal insulin delivery to handle a high. I did that at 4:30 this morning when my BG was 192. I increased my basal to 200% for one hour; by the time I got up at 7:30 it was a more reasonable but still somewhat high 137. But, if you are on shots, you don't have that option.
