Stevia vs Splenda

I have just dropped the use of Splenda due to the "controversy" of it's safety. My brother who is also a diabetic has made the change as well. My first time using Stevia was this morning in my coffee and my BS skyrocketed to 312! No other changes, just the Stevia. Is anyone using this product and having hyperglycemia?

I read alot about substitute sugar also fat feee sf also everyone have what works for them i use real stuff limit my use! Or eat natural ! Does when u use subititute sugar anything else does have same effect maybe used 2 much!

Beware of products that combine Stevia with sugar. I accidentally bought that once. I use Stevia exclusively, no artificial sweeteners, and I have never had a spike from it.

One thing to remember is that each of us react differently to different foods/sweeteners, what is fine for one diabetic may not be for the next person. I tried stevia but didn't like it's taste in coffee, but it was fine in tea. The important thing is to test and see how you react to a given food. It may take a few tries to find out. For now, I still use (evil, lol) sugar in my coffee and count it in my carbs for that given meal. Hope you can work out what is best for you.

I have never had that happen to me on stevia or stevia based sweeteners. But we all can have issues with any number of the chemicals used to create sweeteners. Did you use pure stivia or did you use a derivative?

I grow my own and dry it and turn it into powder. It's is good for steeping and some cooking, but not for baking. Even just adding a single fresh leaf to a hot tea and letting it steep is plenty. Some people get an after taste that is very off putting with true stevia.

I didn't know how bad Splenda or Equal made me feel until I stopped taking it. It was like my insides were free after I quit. I don't know how to explain it, but consuming those sweeteners made me feel tight inside and gave me headaches. The origins of these sweeteners is not bad, like stevia. But it's what they do to them with the chemicals that makes them harmful. Stevia starts with zero calories or carbs, so in theory it should require less processing.

There are some other alternatives out there like the Monk fruit and Nectisse (I can't recall how to spell it) I have tried them both, but usually end up going back to stevia. Since I don't sweeten much of what I eat, I may even use honey or turbinado sugar. There have even been reports from some members that they use organic palm sugar. I would say the best thing to do is some experimenting to see what works for your levels best.

Thank you for your insight Gabby. Did not affect me that much this morning. My BG has been wild as I have some heath issues going on that are causing a lot of anxiety and we all know what anxiety does to a diabetic

Thank you for posting your experiences. Yesterday morning I did not test before the coffee w/ the Stevia, today I did. Although my BG was 179,then before eating breakfast to do my SS, it was 186.

Ok, so maybe it was not the stevia and other things or a combination. Yes, that old thing called stress is a nightmare. I struggle with what is called low grade stress. It is bothersome to say the least. I hope you find one that works for you.

I am allergic to Stevia but the first time I tried it the same thing happened and I broke out in hives.

I didn't buy into the Splenda controversy. I don't use it because it upsets my stomach. The only thing that has not made me sick is Equal.

Howdy Corrections Nurse
I don't use either substance.
If I need sweetness I use a oroduct called WheyLow, a blend of Lactose and Fructose. Orherwise I try to do without.

Has your brother reported any errant readings from the use of Stevia?

It is puzzling to have such a high BG level with a natural product such as stevia.

Unfortunately unless you shop at Whole Foods the grocery stores do not usually stock it. I got mine online directly from the manufacturer at the link I just gave. When my late wife was alive I searched for something my wife could stomach (literally) and she had bad reactions to every natural and artificial sweetner out there at the time. She did have diabetes and I wanted to wean her off her soda and fruit juice. WheyLow was one product which she actually liked in her tea and coffee and didn't upset her stomach. So I bought a 20 lb shipment in 5 lb packets.

Thank you James. I am going to try it in baking. I don't care for baking with Stevia but I do use it in my tea, coffee and hot cocoa. If I can find something that will do well in baked goods I would really be a happy camper!

Hi Jayabee52…No..that is what is so odd, everyone I have talked too stated they have had no trouble with the Stevia. I did some research before I purchased a small box of packets and the on I got is called Simple Truth Organic - Stevia Extract Blend Made with Reb A, which is the purest form of the Stevia leaf.
I have been going over and over in my head what else it could be, but my body is so messed up it could be anything.

If I don't eat a small amount of carb with protein in the morning, my glucose will keep going up. Perhaps that is why you had such a high reading.
