Good Morning my Friends, this is Toni, I have some things to share with you I think are very important. You may know some of these things but, maybe not ????
The condition of Diabetes wrecks havoc on your body: it closes the veins that feed your nerves, eyes and organs, causing Neuropathy, heart damage, strokes, blindness and kidney damage, it produces cholesterol that fills your arteries and causes heart damage and strokes, it causes high blood pressure which causes heart damage , strokes and kidney damage. Diabetic patients die form one of these conditions or are debilitated by stroke, blindness or amputation due to Neuropathy, keeping your blood sugar constantly low does lower your percentage but the percentage is 50 to 6o% that you will acquire one of these conditions. I know many of you already take medication for some of these; high blood pressure or high cholesterol, maybe you already have the beginning of Neuropathy, I have all three.
Years ago when I was diagnosed with Diabetes I went crazy learning everything I could,( nothing new for me I have a passion for learning and it's nothing new for me to be on the computer researching something) I studied all the research at the time on diabetes. I still keep up with all the research to date. Here's the thing, you have to completely change your lifestyle, I don't mean just adjusting your life to counting carbs and checking your levels.
First, if you smoke you can no longer do that besides everything else nicotine does it closes the veins that feed your nerves and organs, the same thing diabetes does. You can't add to the issue.
Second, you must change your diet, not just counting carbs, I mean everything you eat. Now you must start a healthy diet and one that follows the healthy heart diet, you must protect your heart and organs. This means: 5 cups of vegs. .make sure you get dark greens in there ( not cooked with fat meat or any meat ) steaming the vegs. are best, 2 cups of fruit, 2 cups of whole grains, 2 cups dairy, 3 ounces of meat only ( no red meat, beef, only lean meat) or fish, wild caught ( get a food scale, you can get one cheep at walmarts or targets ect., 3 ounces is about the size of a deck of cards) daily. At My Plate they say your plate should be 1/2 vegs, 1/4 Whole grains, 1/4 protein , meat is not the only protein. You won't believe they make design plates divided like this and sell them for alot of money ! Stay away from processed food, eat fresh or frozen, canned only if you rinse the food very good, eat only good fats and fiber.( You can find information and lists of food to eat, even with carb and calorie values on My Plate.gov) Hydrate your body 5 or 6 bottles of water at the least, ( not coffee or soda). If you have some weight to lose, lose it, 10 to 15% body weight loss will make a big difference.
Three, Exercise is a most important thing to do, it lowers your blood pressure, great for your heart and general diabetes condition. You only have to do this 30 mins. a day to reap the benefits. If you can't say, walk 30 mins. at a time , walk 10 mins at a time three times a day, it has been proven you get the same benefits, if you can't go outside, walk in the house, time yourself and walk the three 10 mins. Do exercise 5 days a week. Be sure to check your blood sugar after you exercise.
Four, have a peaceful, happy life, have friends, be thankful, do for others, be gracious. It has been scientifically proven these actions lower your stress chemicals, which can harm your body and state of mind.
The bottom line is when you have the disorder called diabetes 1 or 2 ,you have to take control and protect your body from every angle, it is much more than just managing sugar which of course you must do, it is protecting your body the best you can from the over all damage this insidious disorder causes, and that's a fact.
Hope, I've given you some food for thought.
Thinking of each of you and wishing you well on the journey with your condition.
Toni.

Those are some very good suggestions and I think that they might work for a lot of people diabetic or not. It's just too bad that not everyones bodies respond in the same way, for me an apple or oatmeal send my blood sugars through the roof. I just wanted to say that while these are helpful suggestions I would like to add another one or two. Just stop and breathe every now and again and don't stress your slef out over trying to be as close to perfact as you can. stress can be worse for your diabetes than sugar sometimes, just every once in a while I think we all need a day to relax from everything and maybe have a small treat. For many of us walking or jogging 4 miles a day just isn't going to happen, but I do walk several times a day for 5-15 minutes and that for me is a good start, I will try to improve on each week. So I guess just be the healthiest you that you can be and take a positive role in your own health care needs. Thank you for your post Toni, it did get me thinking.

These things are all very true, but every body is different and not everyone will suffer or succeed with the same plan. That is where a good team really helps that include doctors, educators and so on. Having a good team makes sure all eyes are on the different areas to catch things early and get working on them.

My cholesterol and blood pressure are fine, but I do have neuropathy in my feet, so my podiatrist helps me with that. I go to the eye doctor and have them take a photo of the inside of my eye, so we can spot any changes that might happen. I cannot see an endo, so I have to depend on my pushing my doctor to look at things with me beyond my lab work and A1c.

One of the key things you touch on is having a grateful and as stress free life as possible. That is huge on many fronts and don't forget to try to get a good night sleep.

Thank you Toni for sharing that.
WELCOME to DC.
It is said that as a general rule diabetes takes 10 yrs off one's normal lifespan.
Of course that does not apply to specific persons.

Isn't that a bit depressing? But what can one do? Once diagnosed with the disease, in one of its several forms, the damage is done. I have a friend at the apt complex where I live who smokes and continually is getting decubitus ulcers. Recently they took another part of his foot. Sometimes I think he has a death wish. I suspect he will get his wish in parts and pieces.

I myself have "burning" neuropathy from my knees to toes on both legs and tingling neuropathy from elbows to fingertips.

I have developed a meal plan which has become my new lifestyle. I don't eat bread or any product made from grain. Nor do I eat starchy veggies. I eat a lot of protein, and not so many carbs. Ihave followed this meal plan for the past 3 + yrs and have not needed my 2x daily insulin injection for those 3 yrs.

I also eat a Kidney friendly meal plan as I must undergo dialysis to maintain what little health I do have.

Blessings to you and yours
James

Depressing. I knew this would kill me one way or another. Cannot possibly eat all that food everyday. No matter what I do, it will never be enough.

I'm not a big eater. Just looking at that list…cups of this and cups of that…it's to much. Easier for me to look at just one meal at a time.

Of course, Anon, you only eat one meal at a timd as well. To do otherwise would set you up for a hyperglycemic episode. And usually most serving sizes are half to 3 quarters cup anyway.

Hi Toni, cool article! Are these the effects of high blood sugar or the overall effect that diabetes does to the body and does this apply to all the types? And just wondering do you do these exercises yourself?

Hi ! firefighter dude
Yes the effects on your body covers all the types of Diabetes.
As for me I walk 4 miles a day, I do yoga at 6:30 am to 7:00 am then I walk, get home fix oatmeal and take my pills with my food. Then I meditate, clean the house, eat a snack, take a shower, then I cook lunch for my Friend June who is 80, take it to her, come home and fix my lunch, then I do weight exercises ( only 15 lb weights, but that helps) for my bone strength. Work on a course I taking on the computer and do some research (I'm always looking something up). Have a snack, a little nap, visit some friends, goof off ect, have dinner,go to bed, at the same time every night.Yes, my diet is exactly what I put in the post, and boy I'm a super cook so my Diabetic food is to die for ! ha, ha
I eat at the same time every day, so my body knows when it's going to get nourishment, take my meds at the same time, test my blood sugar at the same time, everyday.ect., ect.,ya, ya
Sorry, to be so wordy but I hope that helps.
By the way I was a Volunteer Fire Fighter in Verdie, NV, I have a great respect for Fire Fighters.
Make today a special day !!!
