Redesigning Family Favorite Recipes

Growing up, Gramma was an awesome cook making delectable meals with veggies but always had a special little something for coffee break or dessert.

As the result of an injury, I was diagnosed with diabetes and had heard how hard it would be to manage my diabetes. Surprise, I remembered that Gramma always had cooking tricks up her sleeve…a substitute for the this or that, so I hit the recipes and started looking for ways to make those favorites within the sugar recommendations. Then I met a dietitian through the VA health system who helped me further refine my recipes and discover diabetes isn't about what you can't have, but what you can have.

I would love to exchange recipes with others on this site.

Thank you for your service, are you the Veteran or are the caregiver for a Veteran? I work at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan and we love our vets. Some of the dieticians here are wonderful and it sounds like you found one. I am in the process of trying to lower my carb intake and figure out how to feed the rest of the family. I guess it's time for me to see a dietician. Please do share your recipes, I would love to try some new things.

There is a recipe tab where you can post your recipes. I don't convert recipes because I am the only diabetic in my house so it would be pointless for me to do it. I can eat just about anything I want to eat as long as I do it in moderation. I test before I eat something like candied sweet potatoes or a dessert and if my numbers are around 90 I eat it, if it is at 100 I won't. Thankfully, I have gotten my diabetes under great control which makes me happy.

I didn't have a Grandma but, I loved all the food my mother cooked. Being from the South that meant alot of fat meats in the vegs, and cooking. I have been a vegetarian for many years. I now eat a little meat only clean chicken, ( no antibiotics or hormones,humanly raised,not corporate farms and processed at that farm, not in China) and salmon, wild caught. I only eat 3 ounces a serving not every day. I love to to bake but I have not changed my recipes. I bake and give it to my friends and family, I keep a small portion for myself. You can still eat the sweets if you have small portions and balance out your carbs. for that meal. I eat frozen yogurt, but only 1/4 cup which I put in a cone, hits my sweet spot ! The recipes I use for baking are vegetarian, you know Wheat flour/ Whole grains, honey or juice instead of sugar.
