Getting Family Involved

In my home are myself, my husband. and my youngest son. My son just learned he is diabetic about 3 months ago. He is on Metformin. We are working together to find new ways to cook our meals. My problem is that I can't get either of them to learn how to give me a shot. They say I don't want to hurt you or I'm not ready yet. I know they both care and love me. Maybe I just need to give it some time ?

That is not a bada idea, family does need to know just in case you can't give your own injection for some reason, I would not have them do it often but it is good to know what to do. My son has learned how to refill the reservoir for my insulin pump and how to give a glucagon injection just in case. I would always want to double check for the correct dosing myself. I think it can also make it feel as if others are sharing or helping in your diabetes management.

Howdy Bre
What shots are you asking them to give you?

If it is insulin, I would not want someone else, even a family member giving me one of those. I had to give my late wife her insulin injections because she was totally blind. However if someone wished to inject insulin into me, I would double and triple check it so that there would be no errors.

If it is injecting something like glucagon, that is a different matter altogether as generally that is given when a PWD is unconscious and time is of the essence.

I understand there is a steep learning curve in giving those kinds of injections, and I would be hesitant to do it myself.

Whatever it is, give them some time

I pray things go well for you

It is the insulin shots. I want them to know how to give a shot in case there is an emergency. When Mama first started taking the shots, all of her children had to learn how to give shots. We practiced on an orange.

Perhaps you could talk with your diabetes educator and schedule an appointment for your family to meet with her and learn how to give injections? ~Lynn @Glucerna
