I just viewed a slide show that one of my friends posted on here and it really coincides with my post. I knew that illness and stress are not the only culprits of high/low blood sugars. Over the past week, well since last Sunday, My blood sugar levels have been on a roller coaster. After eating meals, (2 hours later) my blood sugars are fine then they spike over 200 later the quickly go down to 50-60 just as fast as they went up. I started with a migraine Sunday, Monday was home with the migraine from work, and Tuesday got a Toradol shot for the pain. Once the headache started feeling better (Thursday) I wake up with my always bothersome sinuses acting up and a sore throat and sinus pain and pressure. I uploaded my pump to my doctor last night and it seems there is always an excuse to explain the highs and it is always because I am sick, one way or the other. I just wonder, coz I know I have a sinus infection right now but cannot afford a doctor visit (well cant afford to take off for taking off so much for other appts and having to go in 2-3 hours late this coming Friday for an appt) to go in. I asked if there was anything I could do OTC and she said use a netty pot and if no better Monday to come in . Does anyone have any suggestions what would be a good idea as to what would be good to take to feel better OTC? that will not cause a huge change in blood sugar? Thanks :)

I was dx 2 years ago w/type 2. I have not been good about checking my bs & my last was a shocking 10.6 a month or so ago. Started insulin (short acting), but have to be careful or I'll be hypoglycemic.
Recently read about complications w/diabetes which are scary & am trying to get a handle on bs
Very frustrating. My bs will spike 300+ to > 400.

Mine spiked to 416 Wednesday night. I was extremely stressed that night and it caused it to just creep up and creep up. I checked my sugar and with my pump, it calculated my insulin and I went to bed and it came back down quickly. once I settled my self down it started goin down My blood sugars before I started my insulin pump, my blood sugars would shoot up to the 400s also. I am type 1 and the pump has been a great and my last A1C was 5.9 from 9.8 and 10.0. I also take Farxiga it helps with my insulin resistance so if my sugars go up, it does not stay up, it comes back down faster. Nice meeting you CLB2014 and God bless.

Nice meeting you, too. You're the first person that has said their BS was as high as mine. :)

Yeah, I was actually hospitalized in 2000 with diabetic ketoacidosis. I was in a conscious stated of coma. it was bad. I thank God for the pump because my sugars and A1c have been very much improved.

I am sorry, friend, that you are having such a time.

The neti pot is a good idea. I have a NeilMed Sinus Rinse Sinus Kit (http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/neilmed-sinu...) but have not yet gotten brave enough to put it in my nose and squeeze. My late wife did it all the time without ill effects and she got relief,

But I guess I am chicken in that way, though I probably would get relief from my sinus problem.

I am certain that that solution would not cause a higher BG level for you.

God's best to you

I was told to use that however with the brain eating amoeba so close to home, I am scared. I am also afraid I will drown myself. LOL

brain eating amoeba? Haven't heard of that! Now I need to worry about something new?

Actually to do that sinus rinse kit one may use boiled tap water (what we did for my late wife all the time) or use a distilled water to put the soda/salt solution into the squeeze bottle. I doubt that any amoeba will withstand being boiled for very long.

I have only heard about it here in Louisiana. some kind of bacteria that has been found in some of the swimming and drinking waters. I don't know if it is anywhere else.

Unless you are using lake water to rinse with, you don't have to worry about the brain eating amoeba. They live in fresh water lakes in the heat of summer down here in Florida. Distilled water is the best, as all other chemicals are out of it that could get absorbed by your mucus membranes.

Hi Gabby, In St. John parish here in Louisiana it has been found in the drinking water. That is one reason why I am not gonna try.

Eeeewww. That is bad. You guys don't have city service? In Florida, they are still just in the lakes.

I was given a 'look' last year while recovering from heart bypass surgery when I told them that was why my blood sugar was over 220. I said that my body was under stress was the reason and when it is not under stress any longer it will come back down. They put me on insulin! Two types at that. That was April and in June and July I was having readings at or below normal. I was told to discontinue injections in August and have been keeping everything in check with diet and exercise for 14 odd months…

Hey Chopstix. I have to be on insulin because my pancreas does not produce any insulin at all. My pancreas is just used for decoration for the rest of my internal organs. LOL

Chopstix 2014-10-12 15:33:45 -0500 Report

Understood. One of the first things that flashed through my mind after being told was of my grandmother injecting herself at least twice a day. Plus my dad had started injections before he died. I'm just trying to stay as healthy as possible for as long as possible and you do the same…

I want to get healthy but being stressed with school and work makes it hard sometimes. lol

oh how I know stress affects sugars coz I stay that way. It is the sickness that is making it go up right now. I appreciate your help. I too work in a dr. office and we are crazy. Today was an extremely frustrating day and being clogged up on top of that didn't help.
