The honeymoon is ending

I was diagnosed with type one diabetes at the end of last year and I thought I was managing it reasonably well until about two months or so ago. Ever since then my readings have been terrible after meals, just now I got a reading of above 15 mmol and that's becoming not unusual for me, I went to the diabetes educator but nothing seems to help, I don't understand why this is happening… (obviously I'm not giving enough insulin at meals but the amount I seem to need for the same meal is different every time I have the meal, ie I'll have hypos and hypers for the same meal and never a nice reading)

I don't know, I've been trying really hard to get my sugars in line and nothing seems to work… I'm starting to lose motivation because I feel like everything I try is wrong, I'll either get hypers or hypos… And I'm terrified of the bad complications I'm going to get.

I was told that my body is probably coming out of the honeymoon period, so it reacts differently to the same foods and it's hard to predict whether natural insulin will kick in sometimes or not…

Also I've heard so many times that you can eat whatever you want as long as you have the insulin to cover it… But I'm starting to feel like this isn't true for me. I feel like I can't eat anything with lots of sugar or high GI. The only time I have a good reading is if I eat a meal without any carbs I.e. A steak…

Sorry for the rant, I just am having trouble dealing with this.., I don't know anyone with diabetes and sometimes it's incredibly hard and lonely. How do you keep up the motivation to do well when everything you do seems to be wrong, nothing seems to be working? It's not for lack of trying :(

I hear that phrase of just covering it in our pump support group and i just want to scream! I am very carb sensitive and cannot eat the same is my t1 husband. I too, believe i have come out of my honeymoon phase and right after i started on the pump to boot. Yes, it has been frustrating! Don't forget the change in the weather has up ended me also. Since June i have had to increase my basal insulin from 4 units a day to now over 10, i have just recently changed my morning and lunch ratios from 1:20 to 1:10 and dinner from 1:25 to 1:12.

I understand when you say you feel u have lost your moaviation, been there. I then think, do i want to feelthe way i did before dx last year? HECK NO :-)
that keeps me motivated.

Hang in there, be strong, u will get thru this hump. We are all here for u

Thank you for your lovely response, you're right I definitely don't want to feel the way I did last year! Yes it's a lot to adjust to, especially coming out of the honeymoon I've found my body hard to predict, but I know I'll get there, thank you :)

The idea of eating whatever you want and covering it with insulin is a poor way to go. I know lots of people do it, but it really is not teaching your body anything. The goal is to help your body, not make it work harder. When I first started, I was afraid to eat any carbs. People kept telling me I need to eat more carbs and I wish I had never listened to them. You have to find what works for your body.

When I first was diagnosed (type 2) I dropped pounds and my body was so happy because I cleaned up my food intake. Numbers were dropping and I recall my first 98 I felt low. But like you, it started to get used to the new and demanded that I look even deeper and make more changes. I got frustrated like you, because what had worked stopped.

I had to start adding more activity to my daily routine and keep an even tighter log on what I was eating. I experimented a lot, and still do. The thing is that diabetes is always changing because as our bodies age and change, so does the disease. Hang in there and find a way to keep it fluid so that you can change things up to get the results you need.

For me, controlling and reducing the carbohydrates in my diet has been the key to good control. Keep a food log (for types of foods and portions) and that might help you determine which foods you need to avoid. What kind of carb to insulin ratio are you using for your bolus (meal-time) insulin? I often recommend Gary Scheiner's book, "Think Like a Pancreas; a practical guide to managing diabetes with insulin". It's my go-to reference and has helped me better understand and control my diabetes. 15mmol translates to the high 200's in mg/dl for us in the US and you're wise to be concerned about getting that back down to avoid complications. Thanks I'll check that out. I used to need about 1 unit of novorapid for 15grams of carbohydrate. However now I seem to need much more, and I have been giving more but I've still been spiking a lot. I have arranged another drs appointment, I think my dr wants to change my insulin.

Go ahead, rant away! That is part of what this place is for, venting to someone who knows what it's like and won't judge you harshly.

One thing, however what you wrote: "Also I've heard so many times that you can eat whatever you want as long as you have the insulin to cover it… But I'm starting to feel like this isn't true for me" The first part is true, but only if you want to pack on lbs of fat. The insulin (whether natural or injected) in a high BG situation, will open the fat cells to store the excess glucose.

I feel bad for you to be in this state of your diabetes life, but keep on doing what you know you should be doing. Eventually things will even out and the things which you know should work will work again.
