Why is the HBA1c so variable?

Different sources have different ranges for the HBA1c. Even the calculators show different ranges. Why is that? Which one has the most credibility. So what is pre-diabetes vs diabetes and normal? Is 5 the peak of normal ~ 100mg/dl? Which guideline is more credible? Thank you for your time and patience.

The thing to remember also when you are getting an A1c it's the average of your levels. Your meter only tells you a small snap shot of what is going on inside your body. If you don't test all day long, you don't know how high or low you may really go during the course of a day and night. Our levels are in constant flux. That is why doctors care more about the A1c results.

So far as I know there are 2 formulas for estimating your mean plasma glucose from your HbA1c.
The DCCT (Diabetes Control and Complications Trial) formula which is recommended by Dr. Bernstein and the ADAG (A1C-Derived Average Glucose) formula recommended by the ADA..
As you might expect the DCCT formula is more "aggressive"
For example … using the DCCT 6.0 = 136, ADAG 6.0 = 125

Someone gave me this chart and I find it to be pretty accurate with my A1c blood test results. I hope it makes sense because posting it here changes the format a bit. Not as easy to read.

Howdy PE
I am not sure I understand your question. I know no different sources for the A1c. I did go to the ADA and find this part of your question. It shows a graph of a gluco-normal person and then the graphs of a T1 and a T2 here ~ http://www.diabetesforecast.org/2011/apr/the-...

From another article in Diabetes Forcast on the man who discovered the A1c protein there is this quote: "Another recent development in the A1C test as a clinical tool is that experts now recommend using it to diagnose diabetes and prediabetes. An A1C of below 5.7 percent is considered normal, while A1C levels of 6.5 percent and above call for a diagnosis of diabetes. Levels between those two percentages signal prediabetes. " for more see ~ http://www.diabetesforecast.org/2013/feb/meet...

So from that we may understand the top end of "normal" for an A1c is 5.7, An A1c of 6,5 and above means one has diabetes and between the 5.7 and the 6.5 may be considered prediabetic.

I pray this has cleared up your puzzlement.

James

Thank you James,
I Googled the A1C and found variou charts. Some of them said normal was ~ 5. They had different ranges for pre-diabetes and diabetes. The ADA's ranges allow for higher tolerances. That is why I wanted to know which numbers to believe. On my Diabetes Connect APP the HBA1c it also gives is different values for my mg/dl numbers. Thanks again.
