I am 27 years old and have had Type 1 for 19 years. About 5 years ago I noticed red spots on my left lower leg, which was later diagnosed as NLD…Does anyone else suffer from this? It hurts and is dry and itchy and just ugly! I currently use tattoo makeup to cover it, but I was wondering if anyone has had plastic surgery to cure it? Does that even work? Thanks :)

I "liked" your discussion Ali, not because I like that you have NLD but because your discussion opened my eyes to yet another complication that can happen with diabetes. I've been Type 1 for 38 years and hadn't yet heard of NLD. I hope you get some relief for your condition.

Howdy Ali

Yes I have NLD and have had it for about 15 yrs. Mine is on my right shin and occasionally breaks open and bleeds and then scabs over. It does not hurt at all in fact I am not aware that it breaks open and bleeds until I lift my pants leg and look at it. I am guessing I had bumped it to break it open but I rarely feel the bump at all.

It might be due to the fact that it is on the site of an old injury on my shin I got when 14 or 15. I had been trying to kickstart an old harley motorcycle and my foot slipped off of the kickstarter pedal and it opened a big gash in my leg which took a long time to heal.

No I haven't even considered cosmetic surgery as it hasn't been an issue for any of the ladies I have dated (or at least none of them told me it was a dating dealbreaker). I would have no idea whether it is something which could be covered by surgery.

God's best to you
