Well as for my self it's just the way you look at things you sat and think and think to much on your self and your feelings and what you have to eat and not to eat and how much you can eat and I find it for my self thankfull that I can still just eat! sometimes it's mind over matter self controll and how you look at your self, I know some of you will think I'm crazy but I might be but I am a happy crazy I think God for what I can eat and not worrie what I'm not going to have to eat just take it one day at a time I have been with diabetes for 9yr and I'm sure lots of you have been on the road longer than I but remember one thing we are on it together now…*smile* Eat your Chicken Fish or Pork like your eating it for your first time and not your last and just remember your here for a reason for this day this one day a reason and when you have this food in front of you to eat remember their are so many others that are wishing they could be in your shoes… I'm a newbee here I hope I don't start out hurting any one I only wont to help… Peace and love to you all…

Yes I just spice it up with herb seasoning, and reinvent it all over again. What else is there when your carbs a singing out of control.

What County of Michigan are you in? sounds like the east side of the state. There are probably more rabbit raisers in the boonies than anywhere else.

Call your 4H office they can tell you who is raising rabbits in your area.

mamaoak 2009-04-26 15:03:20 -0500 Report

I'm a vegetarian so that takes all the decision making on meat right out of the picture… LOL

Hi there MamaOak,
I eat Beef,Pork,Chicken,Fish and Pasta(the pasta I use is Barilla Plus with Omega3 and it's multi-grain). I only buy very lean cuts of Beef & pork,.. I have Canadian Bacon with my eggs at least once a week, and I eat Low fat/Low Sodium Boiled ham as lunchmeat with reduced fat cheese(LandO'Lakes Naturally slender White American).I eat only Sirloin as steak,or hamburger(I use 97/3 sirloin for hamburger).
The key here is the portion size, and how you cook it..most of the meat I eat is broiled or Baked..but I do fry things on occasion and I always use Extra virgin Olive oil. I also include as many Veggies in a meal as I can, and I do have Potatoes as well..Only Red Potatoes(these do not seem to spike my sugar unless I over I have one medium one at a meal, boiled for 12mins only,so it isn't mushy, just done..but Never Baked)I also have Rice,(only Basmati, rinsed very well).
I use a salad dressing I make myself with Red wine vinigar & either Olive oil or Smart Choice Oil,Italian seasonings,Lemon Juice,Dill,Garlic and Good seasons dressing mix.
Most days I have at least 3 salads with various things in them..Hard boiled egg whites,Ham(as stated above),Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers,celery,cabbage,carrots,radishes,Onion..can be almost anything you like..but I do not add crutons or things like that.
I do eat bread also..Sour-dough,Rye/seeded,and most multi-grain lower carb breads..but again in moderation. I make my own homemade soups,Chicken,16 Bean & Ham,Seafood chowder,Manhattan Clam chowder,Onion,Lentil,& tomato and I make enough to have for a meal and for Lunches for a week.
The bottom line is I eat many good things, just not alot of any one thing other then Veggies,Fruits & nuts(pistacios, cashews, walnuts, pecans, hazlenuts)but again a handful at a time on the nuts as a snack.
I drink milk(2%),and Green tea I brew myself and then make into ice tea.Tomato juice,Lemonade( the Iced tea and Lemonade, and my coffee I use an artifical sweetner).
I do bake once in a while, and I try to make fresh fruit pies, or Lemon, Key lime with sweetner or very reduced sugar..and more spices for flavor, and I eat one small piece.
Ok, and here's the kicker..every night after I take my insulin,I have 2 small scoops of Lime Sherbert..don't ask me how it works but for some reason it helps my morning BS's to come up low..believe me I have tried not having it…and having some other snack..but this is the only one that works for me. Only the lime works, I have tried all the others, and Lemon is ok too..but doesn't work as well as the Lime.
Ok, now that I have written a novel here, I hope this is of some use..and that you can find a few different things to eat..just remember small portions..More meals..good healthy snacks.

Has everyone forgotten about the Other White Meat. Pork is actually leaner than beef and as lean as chicken. Also, I know I always start a commotion when I say this, but you have to have some fat in your diet. Low fat is not the way to go. If fat were the enemy, I would not have lost 77 lbs and maintained it for the past two years. I never cut the fat off of anything!

Raybie 2009-04-25 07:45:18 -0500 Report

I like Pork too. I shred to for sandwiches and mix it with pasta or rice. Not the best ways but looking for suggestions.

SkipT 2009-04-25 07:48:49 -0500 Report

Instead of the rice or pasta, put you shredded pork on a bed of field greens or a mixed salad. Yum!

Rabbit meat is all white meat.
Rabbit has 795 calories per pound. Compare: chicken at 810, veal at 840, turkey at 1190, lamb at 1420, beef at 1440 and pork at 2050.
Rabbit has the highest percentage of protein.
Rabbit has a lower percentage of fat than chicken, turkey, beef, or pork with unsaturated fatty acids at 63% of the total fatty acids.
The cholesterol level in rabbit meat is much lower than chicken, turkey, beef, pork.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has stated that domestic rabbit meat is the most nutritious meat known to man.
Research shows that rabbit meat has been recommended for special diets such as for heart disease patients, diets for the elderly, low sodium diets, and weight reduction diets.
Because it is easily digested, it has been recommended by doctors for patients who have trouble eating other meats.
Rabbit meat compares very favorably to veal.

Oh I agree with you, Skip. Remember I said trim.. that means I take some of the fat off not all :)

If I find a nice steak with marbling and not a lot of fat on it I just cook it as is :)

And yes, Dave, rabbit is good eating. I have a really hard time finding it in the stores here though. Something else I enjoy when I can find it is lamb!

Antique-Dave 2009-04-25 11:26:54 -0500 Report

At one time we had about 20 breeding does and with the youngsters there were a couple hundred rabbits in the hutches.

The kids were in 4H and we sold rabbits for show and meat for awhile. I don't mind the butchering aspect of raising animals for home use.

All of the rabbits that were slated for the table had the same name… BBQ

mamaoak 2009-04-25 18:23:58 -0500 Report

oh how i love rabbit and lam but the store does not sell these. i live in the boonies you would think yoou could at least get rabbit i do not like venicne all thoug it is good to eat. do not like the willed taste

About 35-40% of my calories come fat, although it's highly biased towards unsaturated fats. Low fat for cardio health may not be as accurate as people would have you believe. Time will tell when more research has been done. I know in my case it was when I dramatically upped my fat intake and dropped my carb intake that my LDL cholesterol fell sharply and my HDL rose.

I agree with kd's approach to diet. I eat more red meat because its iron is more easily absorbed in my anemic body, which necessarily includes more fat. My lab numbers are optimum, and I've lost 40# in past 5 years and kept it off. Beem type 2 for over 10 years and for 67, am pretty active.

I still eat beef as well portion control is the key and a good cut. I have learned to eat all of my veggies first and then go to the meats then to the carbs if I have them on my plate first but I yes even have pasta ack . But still if I am not as hungry after eating the salad first then hey you still can have it but moderation =)

I eat beef also, maybe 2 days a week. I incorporate what I like in most of my meals. I do not eat fish but want to learn. Diabetic meals to me are mainly lowering my carbs, not completely . The things you most need to worry about are pastas, pizzas, breads, sweets etc. So put some beef and pork in your meals and I feel you will be much happier…Debe

Judimar 2009-04-24 22:27:50 -0500 Report

I eat beef too. When I broil a steak I usualy use petite sirloin and trim off the extra fat or just look for one in the store that is as lean as possible. When I purchase hamburger meat I always get the ground sirloin as well. It tastes better and hardly any grease at all when it's cooked.

Sometimes when I make oven fried chicken I will use ritz crackers that has been finely ground up and I use the skinless chicken breast. Almost as good as the real thing :)

We have been at it about the same length of time. Yes, I'm very tired of chicken and fish! :-( I can boil chicken and bake fish, that's about it. Anybody, something easy and good too? Hugs, Angie
