A new chapter in my life

Well, I've just come from the Doctor. Two weeks ago he said that I was Borderline Diabetic. I thought, "Oh No, that can't be. Must be wrong. I already take 17 pills a day for other stuff. I just KNOW that Diabetes can't be added to what I already have!" Went back today for additional blood work, and,you guessed it, didn't he say that I need to be put on Diabetic medication! I don't know how I feel about that, since I had convinced myself that I was "OK." So here I am, to learn as much as I can, and try to get recipes to help me to get healthy. Yes, I know my attitude has a lot to do with it as well.I am determined to be as positive as possible. A new chapter in my life. I want to learn as much as I can to be as healthy as I can. I am asking for help, please.

as a boarderline diabetic, you are T2. You should be able to control your diabetes with exersise and diet alone for now. My father in law has been boarderline for years now. he watches what he eats. I do think he eats too much white rice, but Im not the one to say anything to him. Its his regiment and Im not one to police his habits. Just remember, cut out processed sugars. Cut down on natural sugars. Learn to love fake sugars (artificial sweeteners) and always remember, "Carbs = sugar, sugar = carbs". Cut down on carbs and you should be ok. Fruit juice, keep to half a glass at a time. Same with milk. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hi Bon and welcome again. I am sorry to meet you being newly diagnosed but you have found the right place to make great friends and get great information. If you are on medications only, you are Type 2. That's where I can't help much because I'm Type 1 and on insulin. There are a bunch of great Type 2's here to help! Scroll through some of the older discussions and I'm sure they will help you. I came here In December after being diagnosed and haven't left. You're right, it's just a "New Chapter." Just make the best out of it you can. My thoughts are with you! Angie

Thank you to all who replied to my "New Chapter in my life." This seems like a friendly place where I can learn what's needed for me to adjust to my change in lifestyle. Just reading the replies have lifted my spirits so much, you can't believe. This was just one more thing on top of other health challenges. I am not sure if I am Type 1 or Type 2, so I am presuming I am Type 2, since I think it is the most prevalent. I am trying to do as much reading on the subject as I can, and getting some exercises from the arthritis.com site because I have limited mobility because of degenerative disk disease. (I'm only 55, but a mess! LOL) I was already in the process of losing weight, so this is an added incentive. Thanks for your support. You will be hearing from me.

first of all wecome to the site,I take it you might be type2 you did not say,but if you look around or ask about what you are looking for alot of your freinds in here will jump in to try and help find you the answers you are looking for, I am a part of a group of freinds who try and look out for each others and i beleave we all care for each others,so if I can't help maybe some-one else can.but open up and let your freinds help if they can.

well come this is the place to be you can learn a lot. this sight has helped me a lot as i was dignosed in jan. just watch your carbs that will help a lot. eat lots of vegies some only have 5 carbs a 1/2 cup. fruit is a different story and meat only the size of a deck of cards i wathch calories as well. they have some recipies on her as well.

oh boy, Welcome. I was at a time considered boarderline also and was able to control by diet and exersise alone. Then pills become the norm. now its pills and insulin. This is progressive. Sorry to hear that you are now on pills. They all say, loose about 10% of your weight and you will be doing better. What do you say to a skinny person who cant loose 10%? Try a lower carb diet. Remember, diet doesnt mean not eating, it means what you eat. I find that lower carb seem to work for me. I also try to cut out processed foods as much as possible. Its funny to watch someones face when I enter McDonals and ask for a hamburger without the bun. They are amazed I dont want he bun. For when you are at home, Try a lettuce wrap. In place of the bread, wrap your sandwich fixings in a piece of green leaf lettuce. You can still eat a BLT, without the bread. I tend to eat more meat. I know, its not that good for me, but If I cant at least have some enjoyment in my life, then it would not be worth living. I used to eat at terrible times. I always used to skip breakfast. now I eat a bowl of oatmeal every morning, no matter what my numbers are that morning. I try to eat dinner at about the same time each evening now.
