Hi Lois, Sorry to hear of your issues. I do get cold at times, Notice that I woke up early this am and was freezing, Had the shakes. Runnign a fever. Thank god it broke after I took a shower. Still have a headache. My numbers at the moment are all over the board. I dont sweat it much. it happens. Sex seems to be an issue that is not spoken much on this board as we do have young children reading here. As to your question, Know that you are not the only one in that boat. Yes, I dont remember what a good regular sex life is like. The worst is that its not all me. Wife is on meds that crubs her drive to zero. When I wasnt taking care of myself, I had ED issues. Now that I am taking care of myself, That has gone away but other issues have arrived. Timming seems to be a big factor. When will my ship come in???? married 6 years now and you would cry if I told you when was last time. Keep up your chin. Good luck. dont let the downs get you down.

I also freeze to death. I didn't used to until I started on my medications. Yes, my sex drive is completely gone too. It really sucks! That is a major change for me, because I used to love sex, but now, I just don't care. What can we do?

We can have a bytch forum in my I HATE DIABETES CLUB maybe somone will come up with fantastic ideas on this subject. I am so lost!! Never thought it would end up like this. I don't even have the urge to seek a pardner, now that's sad.
thanks for your input

dispatchernikki 2009-04-22 22:57:00 -0500 Report

I wanna join your club too! i am also so lost. I hate this feeling. I am only 34 years old and no sex drive anymore!! It's driving me up the wall!!

Sounds like you might have some neuropathy, that will cause your sex life to go down the tube. I don't have a partner so it's no problem here. Also the itching can be a sign of neuropathy or kidney problems. Have your kidneys checked at your next appt. See my response below re diet. Look at carbs not necessarily fat to help lower your triglycerides. Lower your carbs leave the fat alone. Dr Atkins was right!!

pop2 2009-04-22 09:57:11 -0500 Report

Can you call a time early in the am say
between 9 or 10 am lets exercise if you
can I will be exerciseing. lets try to get it together, then we eat something
healthy we no what to do we need to get a partner for support and just do it. Iam willing to share good foods that work, I have been diabetic a long time. also eat a smaller portion and cut your fat intake try to briol or grill your food try herb seasoning, also bake and drain your fat, for yor greens smoked turkey is better than pork, I use it for my beans and greens.

I seem to get cold easily as well. I think SkipT has some good points, although I thought all milk had lots of carbs. I usually buy 2% milk, you say whole milk would be better than 2%? Are there any more good veggies other than the collard greens that anyone would recommend? Anybody have some good recipes that are also low in carbs?

MeiMei 2009-04-22 10:50:39 -0500 Report

Any green veggies, spinach, chard, broccoli, broccoli rab, peppers (red, yellow, green and spicey), any leafy lettuce, summer squash (zucchini etc.), and green beans. Any veggies except root veggies (potatoes, carrots)are free carbs. You need to make the produce section of the supermarket your home along with the fish and poultry section. Avoid breads, cereals and starchy veggies (such as potatoes, peas, and carrots) as much as possible. You can have one small hand sized portion of these starchy foods a day for the vitamin content but otherwise I would avoid them. I only use milk in cooking anymore and I now go to soy or coconut milk for that. We are the only mammals that continue to drink milk after weaning—does this tell you anything—we don't really NEED milk to live a healthy life. I know, I am a milk addict too.

you don't really need milk to survive. i am lactose intolerant. i haven't had dairy in over 8 yrs. i get what i need from other foods.

Here are the carb counts of a cup (8 fluid ounces) of the following, according to the USDA database. Note: some milks are "protein-fortified", and sometimes powdered milk is added for more "body" - this will alter the carb counts, so be sure to check the label. Also, "cream" varies depending upon the amount of butterfat and lactose.

Whole milk - 11.4 grams of carbohydrate
2 % milk - 11.7
1 % milk - 11.6
Fat-free (skim) milk - 11.9
Buttermilk - 11.7
Goat's milk - 10.9
Half and Half - 10.4
Light Cream - 7.1
Heavy Cream - 6.6

Evaporated milk (canned) - 25.3
Nonfat evaporated - 29.0
Sweetened condensed milk - 166 (not a typo)

Milk Substitutes
Unsweetened soy milk - between 2 and 5, depending upon brand. (Note: Most soy milk is sweetened.)
Unsweetened almond milk - 2-3 grams, depending upon brand - again, most is sweetened

You could actually take 1/4 heavy cream and add 3/4 cup of water for a low carb milk.

skayc1 2009-04-24 20:39:57 -0500 Report

I bought some unsweetened soy milk, added nutrasweet, and cereal, and it tasted pretty good, I didn't miss my regular milk at all !

SkipT 2009-04-22 06:37:57 -0500 Report

Those "diabetic" meals on wheels are actually bad for you! They really are almost as high in carbs as the regular meal. Forget the skim milk. Go for full fat instead, it is actually lower in carbs and sugar than skim. The collard greens and ham hocks would fit into my low carb lifestyle perfectly, sorry but the cornbread is out. You can still have fried chicken; just don't bread it. Butter is not really that bad, just watch portion size.
Carbs are one of the things that raise triglycerides when consumed in conjunction with high fat. Drop the carbs and the fat is no longer an enemy.
I have maintained a 77 lb weight loss for over two years on a very low carb diet. My triglycerides are 37. If you want more info, just invite me to you friends and I will send you more info.

she specifically said: skim milk, lite margarine ONLY(no butter) no fried nothing, restricted low fat diet. I was lovin 2% milk. She said for me even that was too much fat.

whatabout stewed tomaoes cabbage salad and brocily salid any good

SkipT 2009-04-22 19:34:43 -0500 Report

You are talking my language now. I think everything you mentioned sounds good. I do have to say that I have to watch the stewed tomatoes though. Remember tomatoes are a fruit! But I live on cabbage and broccoli! And caulifower. Boil it and mash it like potatoes and yum!

When was the last time your thyriod was checked? Also if you have access to a swimming pool you could try some water aerobics perhaps.

Judimar 2009-04-22 11:47:26 -0500 Report

I don't swim well either. I do my water aerobics in the shallow end where water is about waist high and I can put my feet flat on the ground :)

cyncyn 2009-04-22 22:16:08 -0500 Report

you don't half to swim to do pool therapy(aka Aquatic therapy), they do exercising in the pool. no impact to body! i do this 3 times a week. have now for 13 years. it keeps me walking, due to back and neck problems.
