I posted earlier about the panic attacks that I had been having. I went to see my doc and he gave me a script for clonepin. I haven't gotten it filled yet and am considering not getting it filled at all. I did some reading and found one article that said when you feel a panic attack coming on to say either out loud or even just in your head…Stop! I tried it and what do you know it worked! Now when I start to feel an attack coming on I start talking trash to myself. It goes something like this…Stop it! You are going to leave me alone! I don't have time to fool with your stupid, raggedy a***! I'm going to go finish the laundry and you are going to go back to wherever it is you came from and leave me the heck alone!!
My doc also wanted me to see a counciler and I am pretty sure that the counciler wouldn't approve of me talking crap to "the panic" but I say if it works and it doesn't require drugs then it's all good!
Ya'll have a blessed day!

Hi MrsCDogg,

Very interesting post. Self-talk can be a big help in dealing with anxiety and panic. And I wouldn't underestimate what a counselor might tell you. We often talk to our clients about self-talk, how they can talk themselves out of anxiety and panic by using positive messages, as well as standing up to it. This might be a good conversation to have with a counselor, as well as to learn about other techniques, like relaxation exercises, that you can use.

Thanks for sharing this!

Anything you can do without the aid of drugs is fantastic. If self talk is working, then kudos to you. I know when I get overwhelmed at certain situations I will stop and take a moment to yell at it. It usually straightens me up and makes me realize nothing bad is going to happen.

Yes! That's exactly how it is working for me.

I usually do it when I get lost in traffic. I have hated getting lost since I was a kid. Not really sure why. But sometimes when I get so turned around I can't figure out where I am, I just have to yell "I just want to get home" and it clears my head.

Howdy MrsC
After having spent a lot of time in my middle age receiving therapy from therapists I am not sure that they may well approve. I was taught to basicly do just what you did, but in more polite terms.

Hey if it works all the better for you! Much better than drugging yourself!

James, Sometimes I am polite to myself…then there are times I have to be a little less civil to stop the panic monster from rampaging in my head.
Slowly the polite times are working more often. Sure seems it has been a long battle. But at least there seems to be fewer new triggers to blindside me.

I've been able in the last couple days to be a little more gentle with my panic. I don't really think of it as talking trash to myself anyway. That's why I use the salty language. I picture the panic as someone who is trying to bully me and the way you deal with a bully is to stand up to them!
